摘要: A heavy duty piston for an internal combustion engine comprises a thermally conductive composition filling 10 to 90 vol. % of a sealed cooling gallery. The thermally conductive composition includes bismuth and/or tin. For example, the thermally conductive composition can be a single-phase binary mixture of bismuth and tin. The thermally conductive composition has improved thermal properties, for example a melting point around 139° C., a thermal conductivity around 22 W/m·K, and a thermal diffusivity around 1.43E-5 m2/s. The thermally conductive composition is not reactive and does not include toxic or cost-prohibitive metals. During high temperature operation, as the piston reciprocates in the cylinder bore, the thermally conductive composition flows throughout the cooling gallery to dissipate heat away from the upper crown and thus improve efficiency of the engine.

摘要: A component for exposure to a combustion chamber of a diesel engine and/or exhaust gas, such as a cylinder liner or valve face, is provided. The component includes a thermal barrier coating applied to a body portion formed of steel. A layer of a metal bond material is first applied, followed by a gradient structure including a mixture of the metal bond material and a ceramic material, followed by a layer of the ceramic material. The ceramic material includes at least one of ceria, ceria stabilized zirconia, yttria stabilized zirconia, calcia stabilized zirconia, magnesia stabilized zirconia, and zirconia stabilized by another oxide. The thermal barrier coating is applied by thermal spray or HVOF. The thermal barrier coating has a porosity of 2% by vol. to 25% vol., a thickness of less than 1 mm, and a thermal conductivity of less than 1.00 W/m·K.

摘要: A piston ring assembly for sealing a cylinder wall to a piston body is provided. The piston ring assembly includes a plurality of rings stacked in an axial direction one in abutment with another. Each ring has an inner face and an outer face. The piston ring assembly also includes a spring which substantially circumferentially surrounds the stacked rings and abuts the outer faces of the rings. The spring biases the stacked rings in a radially inward direction for sealing the inner faces of the rings against the piston body. The spring may be of a strip of material bent into a serpentine pattern when in an at rest condition to apply the biasing force against the piston body.

摘要: A piston for an internal combustion engine is provided. The piston includes a piston body of steel and including a crown portion, a pair of skirt portions and a pair of pin boss panels. The crown portion has an upper combustion surface, a lower surface having an undercrown surface area and an outer annular ring belt with at least one ring groove. The pin boss panels depend from the crown portion and extend in spaced relationship with one another between the skirt portions. Each pin boss panel includes a pin boss having a pin bore, and the pin bores are aligned with one another for receiving a wrist pin. Each pin boss panel also has at least one recess located vertically between the associated one of the pin bores and the crown portion to increase the undercrown surface area for improved cooling of the crown portion.

摘要: A multi-layer gasket including first and second functional layers, each having an opening. Each of the functional layers includes a compression bead, and the compression beads contact and seal against one another when the gasket is compressed between a cylinder head and an engine block. At least one of the functional layers includes a stopper disposed between the compression bead and the opening. The stopper has a gear-like shape including a plurality of circumferentially spaced teeth. Each tooth extends upwardly from a plane by a distance which is less than the combined height of the compression beads. When the gasket is compressed between the cylinder head and engine block, the stopper ensures that the compression beads remain elastically biased against one another and maintain a gas-tight seal.

摘要: A steel piston with anti-coking design features is provided. The piston includes an upper crown portion and a lower crown portion forming an outer cooling gallery therebetween. The outer cooling gallery is substantially closed except for an oil inlet, oil outlet, and optional oil passage(s) to a central cooling gallery. According to one embodiment, at least one anti-coking insert is disposed in the outer cooling gallery and sized to prevent escaping through the oil inlet or the oil outlet. For example, the insert(s) can comprise a helical coil, a plurality of steel balls, coil springs, or chips formed of polymer with abrasive filler. Alternatively, an outer gallery floor to the outer cooling gallery includes a plurality of anti-coking openings disposed sequentially in decreasing spaced relation from one another, or anti-coking openings with varying lengths.

摘要: A corona ignition assembly comprising a plurality of different insulators disposed between an ignition coil assembly and firing end assembly is provided. A high voltage center electrode extends longitudinally between an igniter central electrode and the ignition coil assembly. A high voltage insulator formed of a fluoropolymer surrounds the high voltage center electrode, and a firing end insulator formed of alumina surrounds the igniter central electrode. According to one embodiment, a glue formed of a compliant and insulating material, such as a silicon-based material, forms a seal between the high voltage insulator and the firing end insulator. According to another embodiment, a dielectric compliant insulator is disposed between the high voltage insulator and the ignition coil assembly, and the glue forms a seal therebetween. The glue fills air gaps to prevent unwanted corona discharge, and thus extends the life of the materials and directs energy to the firing end.

摘要: A corona igniter assembly including an ignition coil assembly, a firing end assembly, and a dielectric compliant member is provided. The dielectric compliant member is compressed between a high voltage insulator of the ignition coil assembly and a ceramic insulator of the firing end assembly. During assembly of the corona igniter assembly, the dielectric compliant member pushes air outwards and forms a hermetic seal between the high voltage insulator and the ceramic insulation. The dielectric compliant member can have a rounded upper surface, which may improve the hermetic seal. Alternatively, or in addition to the rounded surface on the dielectric compliant member, the lower surface of the high voltage insulator can be rounded to push air outwards during assembly and provide a hermetic seal.

摘要: A method of coating all surfaces of a plurality of piston rings in a single run by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process is provided. The method can include providing a coil formed of an iron-based material; heating the coil; and depositing a coating on all surfaces of the coil during a single continuous period of time, without having to move the coil during the CVD process. The coil is maintained in a fixed position during the depositing step. The method next includes splitting the coil into a plurality of separate coated piston rings. Alternatively, the method can include providing a plurality of stacked keystone piston ring bodies; and disposing a cylinder around the stack to maintain the keystone piston ring bodies in position while depositing the CVD coating on all surfaces of the keystone piston ring bodies during the single coating run.

摘要: A method of manufacturing a spark plug (20) for being threaded into a cylinder head (28) of an internal combustion engine is provided. The spark plug (20) includes a shell (24) with threads (26) disposed at a predetermined rotational position (a) relative to a shell outer surface (64) and ground electrode (34). The position of the threads (26) relative to the ground electrode (34) places the ground electrode (34) in a desired position in the combustion chamber (22) and relative to components of the engine, thus allowing the ground electrode (34) to provide a robust and reliable ignition. When multiple spark plugs (20) are formed, the threads (26) in each of the shells (24) are repeatedly and accurately formed at the predetermined rotational position (α) by locating the ground electrode (34), threads (26), and dies (76) of a thread forming apparatus (102) in specific locations.
