    摘要: A self-plugging blind rivet for securing together apertured members comprises a tubular shell (11) having a tail end fact (16) at one end, a pre-formed radially enlarged head (13) at the other end, and a stem which extends through the shell and has a stem head (22) adjacent the tail end fact (16) of the shell. The region adjacent the stem head (22) is of increased diameter relative to the rest of the stem shank and has a plurality of axial depressions (26) formed therein, the corresponding region of the shell being arranged to fill the axial depressions (16) in the stem and being harder than the material of the shell (11) in a region adjacent the radially enlarged head (13). In use and under axial compression leading of the shell (11), the shell (11) buckles in the region adjacent the member remote from the performed head to form a blind head in contact with said member so as to clamp together the apertured members.

    摘要: Disclosed is a self plugging blind rivet for securing together apertured members, the rivet comprising a tubular shell having a tail end face at one end and a preformed radially enlarged bead at the other end, and a stem that extends through the shell and has a stem head adjacent the tail end face of the shell and a breakneck located away from the stem head, in which the region of the stem shank on the stem head side of the breakneck has a plurality of depressions formed therein extending to the breakneck, the corresponding region of the shell substantially filling the depressions in a region adjacent the stem head and progressively less towards the breakneck whereby, in use and under axial compression loading of the shell, the shell preferentially buckles in the region adjacent the member remote from the preformed head to form a blind head in contact with the member so as to clamp together the apertured members. Also disclosed is a method of assembling the above-described rivet comprising inserting the shell in a die, the first part of which closely fits the outside diameter of the shell, a second part being formed as a taper and which progressively increases in diameter until it intersects a third pan of the die into which the tail end of the shell protrudes, supporting the head of the shell with an abutment inserting a punch which has a first diameter closely fitting the bore of the rivet shell and a second diameter which closely fits the third pan of the die, applying a compressive force between the punch and the abutment so as to compress the rivet shell to fill both the taper and the larger diameter of the die, removing the abutment and punch, inserting a stem and ejecting the assembled shell and stem through the die, whereby, during ejection, the material of the shell is forced into the depression in the stem to substantially fill the depressions at least at the tall end of the shell and progressively towards the breakneck.

    摘要: A tool for placing fasteners of the kind having a threaded first part which is pulled towards and/or into a second part to place the fastener without the need to accurately align the tool with the fastener, comprises a tubular nosepiece providing an annular abutment face for abutting the second part of the fastener and a mandrel which extends through the nosepiece and has a threaded part which projects forwardly of the abutment face for threadedly engaging the first part of the fastener. A draw bar which is rotatable and reciprocable on the tool axis which extends through the annular abutment face at right angles thereto transmits rotary and reciprocating motion to the mandrel through a universal joint whereby the mandrel is given freedom to move pivotally out of alignment with the tool axis. A tube surrounds part of the mandrel and limits the freedom of movement of the mandrel, and is movable along the tool axis. In one embodiment the tube is reciprocated and rotated with the mandrel and in another embodiment, the tube is not obliged to rotate or reciprocate with the mandrel. The tube projects forwardly of the abutment face when at the forward end of its reciprocation and engages the fastener and assists correction of alignment of the tool and prevents inward collapse of the fastener.

    摘要: A blind rivet for fastening apertured sheets comprises a tubular shell having a head at one end, and a mandrel having an enlarged head which when pulled into the bore of the shell deforms the shell to produce a blind head. The mandrel has a breaker groove at which it breaks when the rivet is fully placed, leaving the mandrel head plugging the shell. The mandrel head has an integral peripheral skirt which can be deformed outwardly by a tool used for placing the rivet, so that the skirt engages the shell and prevents the mandrel head from being pushed out of the bore of the shell. The mandrel head is adapted to wiredraw after the blind head has been formed so that the mandrel will break substantially flush with the head of the shell when fastening either thick or thin sheets.

    摘要: A blind rivet and a method of assembly comprising a tubular shell and mandrel in combination. The mandrel comprises a stem and a radially-enlarged head which in use forms a blind head to the shell to set the rivet, in which either the head of the mandrel or the bore of the shell is formed with a plurality of depressions the bases of which lie on a notional circle having a diameter which, where the depressions are formed in the head of the mandrel, is less than the bore of the shell or, where the depressions are formed in the bore of the shell, is greater than the diameter of the head of the mandrel. The depressions, which are preferably generally longitudinally disposed, define ribs, ridges or other protusions therebetween which in use and on pulling the mandrel into the shell bore extend radially beyond the bore of the shell, so that material of the shell becomes displaced by contact with the ridges and occupies the depressions. The invention may be applied either to pull-through, or self-plugging rivets.
