Abstract:
A round for placement and firing in the barrel of a large caliber gun, the round comprising a cartridge case defining a cylindrical chamber having axially opposed open and closed ends, a plurality of axially-adjacent annualr explosive charges coaxially-disposed in the chamber, the charges defining a bore coaxial with said chamber and each charge being shaped to generate on detonation a predetermined shock wave in the case, a projectile disposed in the chamber proximate the closed end, the projectile having a trailing end shaped to convert shock waves generated by detonation of the annular charges to projectile acceleration, an explosive in the case for initially propelling the projectile axially through the bore toward the open, end, an electrical detonator for each annular charge responsive to an electrical signal, and a power source and circuit for generating the electrical signal in response to axial movement of the projectile in the bore.
Abstract:
A tube-launched projectile includes an airframe with an open aft end, an optical fiber dispensing bobbin, and an obturator having a rocket motor attached to a hard point in the aft end of the airframe. The obturator forms a pressure vessel with insulated inner walls which contain rocket propellant and an igniter. An ejectable plug located in the rocket nozzle is expelled upon motor ignition.
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing reinforced optical fiber including conveying optical fiber from a source; symmetrically, coaxially winding reinforcing fiber to a selected density per unit length around the optical fiber; forming an resin matrix among the reinforcing fibers; and coating the resin matrix with an external coating. Reinforcing a predetermined length of an elongated optical fiber comprises gradually reducing the thickness of the external coating and then gradually reducing the density of reinforcing fiber and the thickness of the resin matrix to form a transition from a reinforced fiber and a non-reinforced fiber.
Abstract:
A cavity in an airframe from which an airfoil is deployed is automatically closed to reduce aerodynamic drag by a fairing element hinged to the force and aft cavity edges and resiliently deformable from an unbent aerodynamic position outside the cavity to a bent position within the cavity. The non-deployed airfoil overlies the bent fairing element and retains the fairing in a bent position against the resilient force tending to restore it to the unbent position, until airfoil deployment.
Abstract:
A space craft cellular energy generating and storage device for generating electrical power in space and storing the power for extended periods of time. The space craft generating and storage device characterized by having a pair of annular rotating housings having a plurality of individual compartments therein. The compartments receiving material which is compartmentalized to accurately control the mass distribution during the rotation of the housing for maintaining speed as energy is withdrawn or generated.
Abstract:
A variable inertia energy storage system for storing large amounts of mechanical energy for an extended period of time on land or on a mobile vehicle. The energy storage system can also be used for generating electrical power for use on demand by a subsystem or the like.
Abstract:
A multiple spoke energy storage system used in a space environment for storing large amounts of mechanical energy for extended periods of time. The storage system also provides means for generating electrical power that can be used to meet subsystem demands.
Abstract:
A high pressure gas supply system used for storing and activating a fluid in a liquid form and converting the liquid to a high pressure gas when needed. The high pressure gas is used for the control and stability of missile fin actuators, canards, hot or cold gas thrusters and other applications on a missile.
Abstract:
A hybrid semi-strapdown infrared seeker for mounting in a missile or the like. The seeker processing both imaged and non-imaged data available around a potential target area displayed on a vidicon and providing a level of target identification, target discrimination, target acquisition and attack at the target's controid or other selected points on the target.
Abstract:
An electrically controlled radio frequency tuner used in conjunction with an antenna. The antenna used both as a transmitter and a receiver. The tuner eliminating waveform reflection and circulator feedthrough of transmitted signals which heretofore reflected back into the receiver creating a noise threshold that decreased the sensitivity of the receiver.
