Each rib is so constructed and arranged that it has sufficient resistance to cold flow that it only slightly flexes and bends around the thread to form a shallow indentation on the rib when the rib is forced into contact with the thread, the indentation being sufficient to provide purchase on the threads for removing the closure.

A tamperproof package comprising a container having a neck with external threads formed thereon and a plastic closure comprising a top panel and an integral depending annular skirt having integral internal threads formed thereon complementary to the threads on the neck of the container. The container has an annular locking bead positioned axially below the threads. The skirt has a pilfer ring at the lower end thereof connected to the upper portion of the skirt by a plurality of circumferentially spaced integral bridge portions that are located below the threads when the closure is on the container. The ring has a radially inwardly extending annular rib engaging beneath the locking bead of the container when the closure is on the container. One of the bridge portions has a greater cross section than the remainder of the bridge portions such that when the closure is applied to the container, the rib on the pilfer ring snaps over and engages below the locking bead on the container, and when the closure is rotated to remove the closure from the container, the bridge portions are broken except for the bridge portion having the greater cross section such that the pilfer ring remains connected to the closure.

Within the boundaries of the peripheral wall, a depending circular wall is integrally formed and portions of such circular wall are integral with portions of the peripheral wall. The circular wall is provided with appropriate internal projections or ribs to engage similar ribs or depressions provided on the closure for which the tool is designed.

An improved vapor-seal, child-resistant closure and container combination is disclosed herein. The container comprises a cylindrical plastic body which is molded in one piece and has circumferentially spaced, radially extending projections on the upper end thereof that have notches therein. The closure comprises a one-piece plastic body having a top panel and an annular depending skirt with circumferentially spaced lugs extending radially inwardly for engagement with the notches. An annular integral rim or abutment is provided on the annular surface of the top panel of the closure and depends downwardly therefrom. A unique two-piece, vapor-seal liner is interposed between the annular abutment and the lugs for engagement with the upper end of the container. The two-piece liner incorporates a resilient disk member which serves as a spring between the closure and container and a deformable disk positioned beneath the resilient disk which may be pressed into sealing engagement with the upper rim of the container to provide a vapor-tight seal between the closure and container.

The closure also comprises a ring telescoped over the cap and surrounding the skirt of the cap. The ring has a plurality of lugs extending upwardly from the radial flange of the cap and adapted to engage the depressions upon application of a downward force on the ring. Each depression on the radial flange has a substantially vertical surface at one circumferential end adapted to be engaged by a lug on the ring when the ring is rotated in a direction to thread the closure onto the container. Each depression on the radial flange of the closure also has an inclined surface at the other circumferential end such that upon mere rotation of the ring in a direction to unthread the closure from the container results in the lugs on the ring sliding up the inclined surfaces so that the closure can only be removed by a combined downward force on the ring and rotational force in the direction of threading the closure off of the container.

The flexibility provided by the slot and the thin bridge attachment permits the pawl to be manually deflected upwardly to disengage the pawl and lug, thereby permitting rotational removal of the closure.

A tamper proof molded closure is provided for use on a threaded bottle neck having an external peripheral bead below the threaded portion of the bottle neck. The closure comprises a one piece molded cap having a circular panel portion and a depending annular skirt portion with the upper portion of the skirt defining internal threads and a lower band portion of the skirt defining an internal shoulder that is expandable to snap over the container bead during the assembly operation to lock the closure to the bottle neck. At a region intermediate the threaded portion and the interior shoulder, the external wall of the band portion of the closure is scored to form a slit extending peripherally around the entire closure. The depth of the slit extends through the wall of a closure at all points except for a limited number of peripherally spaced arcuate segments where the depth of the slit is less than that of the thickness of the skirt portion. This provides connecting bridges between the threaded portion and the band portion of the closure which are readily severable by rotational movement of the closure in a direction to unscrew it from the bottle neck. The slit height is limited to permit collapsing of the slit during the application of the closure to force the internal shoulder over the container bead.
