    摘要: A rigidly bonded electro-optic phase retardation device comprising a transparent, electrically induced ferroelectric ceramic element bonded with a rigid adhesive in sandwich-like configuration between transparent sheet elements, such as glass, or polarizer elements is described. The electro-optic phase retardation device, provided with means for applying an electric field across at least a portion of the induced ferroelectric ceramic element, can be utilized as a birefringent optical device for controllable modulation of polarized light passing through the device. The device is bonded with an adhesive material, such as a cross-linked unsaturated polyester, effective to provide a rigid boundary between the ceramic material and the sheet elements thereof and exhibits rapid optical response speed in the switching from a field-induced birefringent mode to an isotropic zero-field condition. The device is thus suited to application in welding plates, glasses, goggles, helmets and similar devices for controlling the transmission of light radiations to the wearer's eyes, particularly in the prevention of flashblindness.

    摘要: A visible range synthetic light polarizing element is provided, the optical and polarizing properties thereof having been selectively effected by regulated exposure of said polarizing element to ultraviolet irradiation. The ultraviolet irradiation can be either polarized or non-polarized, but in either case, is at intensities greater than that produced incidentally or by ambient ultraviolet irradiation sources. The resultant light-polarizing element is characterized by its heightened luminous transmittance, an improvement accomplished without departure from good polarization efficiency (i.e., greater than 99.9%).

    摘要: An integrated wet stretch method of making an intrinsic polarizer includes the following steps in order: providing a polymeric film comprising poly(vinyl alcohol) and having an original length; immersing the polymeric film in a first bath comprising a first solution having a pH of less than about 3; uniaxially stretching the first polymeric film in the machine direction thereby forming a stretched polymeric film; removing the stretched polymeric film from the first bath; removing excess first solution from the stretched polymeric film; and uniaxially stretching the stretched polymeric film in the machine direction, at a temperature of at least about 120° C., thereby forming a further stretched polymeric film.

    摘要: This invention relates to a new and improved light-polarizing sheet comprising molecularly oriented polyvinyl alcohol containing an oriented block segments of polyvinylene and said polyvinyl alcohol. In particular, the polarizing sheet comprises a polyvinylalcohol/polyvinylene block copolymer material wherein the polyvinylene blocks thereof are formed by molecular dehydration of a sheet of polyvinylalcohol; said sheet of polyvinylalcohol/polyvinylene block copolymer material comprising a uniform distribution of light-polarizing molecules of polyvinylalcohol/polyvinylene block copolymer material varying in the length, n, of the conjugated repeating vinylene unit of the polyvinylene block of the copolymer throughout the range of from 2 to 24; the concentration of each of said polyvinylene blocks, as determined by the absorption of wavelengths ranging from 200 to 700 nm remaining relatively constant, the degree of orientation of said light-polarizing molecules, as measured by the spectral dichroic ratio, R.sub.D, of said blocks, increasing throughout said range with increasing length, n, of said polyvinylene blocks; said polyvinylene block concentration and said degree of orientation of said molecules imparting to said sheet a photopic dichroic ratio, R.sub.D, of at least approximately 45.
