    摘要: A retroreflective optical communication system in which a laser at a control station is aimed at a retroreflector at a second position or station whose reflectivity can be varied so as to impress a signal onto the retroreflected beam, and then back to the first station for detection. The communication link is such that the laser and aiming capability are at the receiving or control station and, greatly reducing the aiming and power requirements and cost at the retroreflector end of the link. The retromodulator optical communication system provides a high data rate, secure, non-jammable line-of-sight communication link between the second station, which may be a remotely piloted vehicle (RPV) and its control station. The retromodulator maybe entirely passive and thus would not give its presence away as would RF transmitting and receiving stations.

    摘要: A cable connector assembly capable of mating to an armored optical cable and providing a hermetically sealed electronics cavity is described. A connector assembly provides a means for placing electronics in an electronics cavity. The electronics are capable of converting electrical signals to optical signals or optical signals to electrical signals within the electronics cavity in the connector assembly so that optical to optical matching of optical fibers is unnecessary. The connector contains a means for anchoring the armoring wire of the armored optical cable and at least two-spaced apart means for sealing the electronics cavity from leakage of pressure around the optical fiber cable. Furthermore, the connector assembly contains a means for passing the optical fiber core through a breakable link before termination in the electronics cavity. W

In the preferred embodiment the energized particles are atoms, ions, or molecules different than the lasing medium which are excited to a long-lived state above the ground state. Various materials usable in such light amplification apparatus are disclosed as well as means for passing light through an amplification region.
