    摘要: A light waveguide is protected with a protective covering loosely surrounding the waveguide, which covering is constructed of an inside layer and an outside layer. The inside layer is composed of a material selected from a group consisting of polycarbonate, polyether sulfone and polyetherimide while the outside layer is composed of a material selected from a group consisting of polyester, polyether, polyurethane, copolymers of these polymers as well as block polymers of each of these polymers. The selection of these materials with the two layers provides a good connection between the two layers of the covering.

    摘要: A support of soft material (4) has a fiber-receiving groove (5) in one of its surfaces (40). The groove is filled with a transparent setable liquid medium. A rigid link part (8) is pressed against the groove. Suitably prepared ends (11, 21) of two optical fibers (1,2) are inserted into the liquid-filled groove from opposite ends thereof. The medium is caused to set, and then the link part (8) is removed from the support. The optical fibers come away with the link part and the support mold is reusable. In a variant, the link part is stretched prior to gluing, and is allowed to return to its original length after the glue has set. This prestresses in the connection.

    摘要: A device for illuminating a line-shaped light switching mask having a plurality of magneto-optical light modulation elements and which is arranged between polarizers, comprising a light source, an optical transmission system for transmitting as large as possible part of the light emitted by the light source to the light switching mask, and at least one optical body which is arranged in the light path between the light source and the light switching mask in order to homogenize the light distribution. The optical transmission system comprises an adapter whose entrance surface corresponds to the geometry of the light source and whose exit surface corresponds to the geometry of the line-shaped light switching mask and a thin light conductor plate. The line direction of the exit surface of the adapter as well as that of the light switching mask extends in the plane of said plate.

    摘要: An infrared temperature probe for high pressure use is in the form of a hollow bolt adapted to be threaded into a complementary threaded aperture in the wall of a pressure vessel with the end thereof disposed flush with the internal surface of the pressure vessel wall. An infrared transparent window is secured in the end of the hollow bolt with one surface thereof disposed flush with the end of the bolt. A bundle of optical fibers is secured within the opposite end of the hollow bolt and a glass rod is mounted within the hollow bolt in operative relation to the window and the optical fiber bundle for transmitting infrared radiation from the window to the optical fiber bundle. The interior of the hollow bolt may be supplied with a circulating cooling liquid or gas. An infrared temperature probe can also be used with a mold having an aperture for receiving an ejector pin wherein the hollow ejector pin is provided with an impact surface at one end and an infrared transparent window in the opposite end for receiving infrared radiation from a hot molded article within the mold when the ejector pin is located within the aperture in the mold. A bundle of optical fibers extends through the hollow ejector pin and is disposed in optical transmitting engagement with the window.

    摘要: A corn sorting and inspection system automatically inspects various characteristics of ears of corn positioned on an endless conveyor and moved past a series of consecutive grading and removal stations, ears of corn not having charcteristics in conformance with predetermined standards set at each station are removed from the conveyor system at the end of the particular station, thereby sorting those ears of corn which meet the predetermined standards from those which are considered flawed. The ears of corn are positioned lengthwise parallel to the direction of movement and in a single file on the endless conveyor and passed through each of the individual grading and removal sections, the ears of corn being automatically inspected for smut, short ears, unhushed ears, cob diameter and kernel damage. Each grading and removal station grades or inspects the individual ears as they pass under or through standard L.E.D. scanners which sense certain light reflective characteristics of the ear of corn or length of time required for the ear to pass the sensing device.

    摘要: An optical fiber position sensor includes an optical fiber cable wound in the shape of a single layer, tightly wound coil, the coil being secured to a first member. A second member, which is linearly movable with respect to the first member, has fixed thereto an LED which is aimed at the coil such that radiation being emitted from the LED is injected approximately tangentially into the coil. Radiation being transmitted through the coil is attenuated as a function of the distance that it travels therethrough and as a result, radiation exiting the coil through the terminations is representative of the location of the movable member with respect to the fixed member.

    摘要: A device and method for limiting the amount of twist in a support filament as elongate transmission elements are being laid into sinusoidal grooves in the filament. The device has a groove follower in which a probe extends into a groove whereby the follower rotates around the filament, dependent upon the sinuous movement of the groove. A limiting means prevents rotational movement of the follower and probe beyond specified points of rotation and this is sufficient to restrain the filament from further twisting beyond these points.
