Printed circuit techniques and two-shot molding techniques are used to form a metal radiating element, a metal ground plane element, a metal antenna feed, a metal short-circuiting strip and metal capacitive loading plates within small antennas that are buried within transmit/receive radio-devices such a mobile cellular telephones. Balanced and unbalanced, single-feed, two and three band antennas are provided wherein the radiating element is laterally spaced from the ground plane element, to thereby provide an antenna having a very low profile or height, including antennas wherein the ground plane element and the radiating element are placed coplanar on the same surface of a PCB. A thin dielectric carriage on a PCB allows for the metal capacitive loading plates to be placed on the sidewalls of the dielectric carriage, to thereby provide reactive loading of a radiating element that is on the top surface of the dielectric carriage.

A method and apparatus for direct digital synthesis (DDS) of signals using Taylor series expansion is provided. The DDS may include a modified phase-to-amplitude converter that includes read-only-memories (ROMs), registers and, a single adder. Values stored in the ROMs may produce one component of a sinusoid signal, and each of the ROMs may be of a different size, such as a coarse, intermediate, and fine ROM corresponding to respective higher resolution phase angles. The outputs of the ROMs when combined can form a digital output signal in the form of a Taylor series expansion of a sinusoid function.

Operating parameters of a planar antenna are controlled by providing a planar metal radiating element having an edge, by providing a slot within the radiating element, the slot having side walls, an open slot-end that lies on the edge of the radiating element, and a closed slot-end the lies within the radiating element, and by providing a thin, line-like, and metal segment, at least a portion of which is coplanar with the radiating element and that extends from the open slot-end to the closed slot-end without physically engaging the slot's side walls. The metal segment can be connected to the antenna's ground plane to thereby form a parasitic element, or the metal segment can be connected to the radiating element to thereby form an extension of the radiating element.

A unitary assembly provides two virtual planar inverted-F antennas (PIFAs) within a physical volume that is occupied by one of the PIFAs. The virtual two-antenna assembly includes a single RF feed, and provides multiple frequency response in the AMPS, PCS, GSM, DCS and GPS frequency bands. A composite radiating element is supported above a ground plane. A C-shaped slot divides the composite radiating element into an outer radiating element and an inner radiating element. Two metal stubs within a slot-discontinuity of the C-shaped slot physically and electrically connect the outer radiating element to the inner radiating element. An RF feed post connects to the outer radiating element, and both of the inner and outer radiating elements are shorted to the ground plane. One metal stub provides virtual RF feed to the inner radiating element, the other metal stub provides a matching and/or tuning function to the inner radiating element, and the two metal stubs provide a matching and/or tuning function to the outer radiating element. The outer radiating element includes an L-shaped slot, and the inner radiating element includes a linear slot. Reactive loading plates extend from the composite radiating element toward the ground plane.

Single feed planar inverted-F antennas (PIFAs) are provided for three, four or five frequency bands of resonance in both cellular and non-cellular frequency bands. The PIFAs include a dielectric carriage having a metal radiating element located on a top surface thereof and sidewalls having a metal ground plane element located at the bottom of the sidewalls. The non-radiating edge of the radiating elements include a downward extending shorting strip that is connected to the ground plane element and a downward extending feed strip that is spaced above the ground plane element and is connected to a feed cable. The radiating element includes downward extending matching and loading plates whose free ends are spaced above the ground plane element, which provide impedance matching and reactive loading to the radiating elements. Configurations of slots (open and closed) within the radiating elements selectively provide multiple frequency resonance to the radiating elements in both cellular and non-cellular frequency bands.

A three-band, two-antenna, assembly includes a planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) having a radiating/receiving element that is spaced from and extends generally parallel to a ground plane element. The planar radiating/receiving element of an inverted-F antenna (IFA) is located in an open space that exists between the radiating/receiving element of the PIFA and the ground plane element. The radiating/receiving element of the IFA extends either perpendicular to, or parallel to, the radiating/receiving element of the PIFA. The radiating/receiving element of the PIFA includes one or more open slot configurations that operate to provide dual resonant frequencies for the IPFA (AMPS/PCS or GSM/DCS). The radiating/receiving element of the IFA operates in a non-cellular frequency band (ISM or GPS).
