A carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation and synchronization method and apparatus of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) receiver receiving an OFDM modulated signal. The OFDM receiver's CFO synchronization method includes step (a) performing an initial CFO estimation pull-in step using double correlation, step (b) performing a coarse residue CFO estimate acquisition step using independent combination of the double correlation and auto-correlation, and step (c) performing a small residue CFO tracking step by using the double correlation. Aspects of the invention solves the problems in the related art that a CFO tracking range cannot be reliably used in practice when the CFO tracking range is too narrow and a CFO estimation error increases when the CFO tracking range is too wide.

A channel estimation method and apparatus based on two adjacent windows. The channel estimation method includes scanning a signal containing noise and channel impulse response (CIR) information with a first window and a second window, detecting a CIR distribution area based on the ratio between the average power of the signal within the first window and the average power of the signal within the second window and at least one threshold value, eliminating the noise from the CIR distribution area and estimating the CIR information. Accordingly, noise interference can be minimized and accurate channel estimation can be accomplished.

The channel estimation method includes generating a first correlation sequence by calculating a linear correlation between a baseband sampled complex signal and a locally stored pseudo-noise signal and obtaining a second correlation sequence by iteratively removing inter-path interference from the first correlation sequence and generating a first channel impulse response (CIR) sequence based on the second correlation sequence. And, obtaining a third correlation sequence by removing random-data interference from the second correlation sequence based on the first CIR sequence and a feedback signal and generating a second CIR sequence based on the third correlation sequence.

An inter-carrier interference (ICI) mitigating equalizer includes a channel estimator, a channel calculator, an ICI estimator, a subtracter, and an equalizer. The channel estimator estimates a channel response from a received signal, and the channel calculator calculates a basic component of a channel response and fluctuating components of the channel response from the estimated channel response. The ICI estimator multiplies the fluctuating components of the channel response by a received signal in a frequency domain, filters the multiplication results according to filter coefficients, and estimates an ICI component included in the received signal based on the filtering results. The subtracter subtracts the ICI component from the received signal in the frequency domain. The equalizer equalizes an output signal of the subtracter based on the basic component of the channel response.
