Abstract:
In one embodiment, the present invention is a latch device having a latch and a base portion, where the latch is selectively connected to the base portion, and pivotable about the base portion along a first axis. The present invention also includes a cam mechanism for securing the latch such that the latch is secured for rotation and support of a door for a vehicle along a second axis when the door is rotated about a first axis but allows free movement of the latch when the door is actuated for rotation about a second axis.
Abstract:
A tailgate for a vehicle has a supplemental tailgate that retracts within the tailgate and is extendable therefrom in order to provide different assist functions. The supplemental tailgate may include a pivotable molding, which mounts on a movable frame portion, a latching assembly, and a gravity latch assembly. When pivoted, the pivotable molding releases the latching assembly, allowing the supplemental tailgate to be moved to various extended positions. The gravity latch assembly engages the pivotable molding to prevent the pivotable molding from being pivoted when the tailgate is in the generally vertical closed position, and disengages the pivotable molding to allow for pivoting when the tailgate is in the generally horizontal open position.
Abstract:
A tailgate for a vehicle has a supplemental tailgate that retracts within the tailgate and is extendable therefrom in order to provide multiple assist functions. The supplemental tailgate includes a pivotable molding, which mounts on a movable frame portion, and a latching assembly. When pivoted, the pivotable molding releases the latching assembly, allowing the supplemental tailgate to be moved to various extended positions. When the movable frame portion is in an essentially fully extended position, it can be rotated downward relative to the tailgate and a flip step pivoted to a use position in order to provide an assist step function.
Abstract:
A tailgate for a vehicle has a supplemental tailgate that retracts within the tailgate and is extendable therefrom in order to provide bed extender, box extender and step assist functions. The supplemental tailgate includes a pivotable molding, which mounts on a movable frame portion, and a latching assembly. When pivoted, the pivotable molding releases the latching assembly, allowing the supplemental tailgate to be moved to various extended positions. When the supplemental tailgate is in its stowed position, the pivotable molding may be aligned with the top surface of the tailgate in order to provide an esthetically pleasing appearance and provide paint scratch resistance. When the movable frame portion is in an essentially fully extended position, it may be rotated relative to the tailgate in order to provide the box extender and assist step functions.

Abstract:
The present invention is a swing and fold down tailgate mechanism which includes an inner panel, a first handle supported by the inner panel operably associated with a first latch and a second latch, a second handle supported by the inner panel operably associated with the first handle and a third latch. The present invention also includes a hinge member operably associated with the first handle and the second handle for providing hinged support of the tailgate such that the tailgate pivots in a drop down direction and alternatively in a swing open direction. When the first handle is actuated, the first and second latch will release and the second handle will be deactivated, allowing the tailgate to pivot using the third latch and hinge. When the second handle is actuated, the second and latch will release and the first handle will be deactivated, allowing the tailgate to pivot about the first latch and hinge.
Abstract:
A supplemental tailgate extends from the tailgate frame of a pickup truck and is positionable in multiple orientations to provide a variety of uses, including as an extension of the pickup truck bed. The supplemental tailgate includes a cross member connected between two telescoping supports, which forms a part of the tailgate molding when stored within the main tailgate structure. A lock rod assembly interconnects the supplemental tailgate and the body of the pickup truck to stabilize the position of the extended supplemental tailgate when positioned perpendicular to the opened main tailgate. The lock rod assembly can be formed as flexible cables that can be housed within the cross member for easy deployment when needed. The lock rod assembly can also be formed as fixed length rods that are pivotally mounted on the cross member and stored within the cross member for easy deployment.
Abstract:
A tailgate for a vehicle with side walls and a bed has a supplemental tailgate that retracts within a tailgate frame and is extendable therefrom. The supplemental tailgate may include a guide system secured generally between the rear panel and the front panel of the tailgate frame, a movable frame assembly having two telescoping supports extendable from, pivotable relative to and retained by the guide system. The supplemental tailgate may also include a cross member connected to the two telescoping supports and extending therebetween. A lock rod assembly telescopically extends from and is pivotable relative to the cross member, with the lock rod assembly including a lock rod bar having a lock rod latch affixed thereto that is adapted to releasably latch to one of the vehicle side walls to thereby support the movable frame portion relative to the guide system when the tailgate frame is in the generally horizontal open position and the movable frame assembly is pivoted upward relative to the tailgate frame.
Abstract:
A refueling cap assembly for opening and closing a filler neck of a fuel tank has a frame which is mounted to the filler neck of the fuel tank. A cover is pivotally mounted to the frame to move between open and closed positions for opening and closing the filler neck. A locking mechanism, having a locking body, is mounted to the frame for securing the cover to the filler neck in the closed position. The locking body moves between a locked position engaging a finger projecting from the cover to secure the cover to the filler neck, and a release position releasing the cover from the filler neck. The cap assembly is characterized by the locking body moveable in a flip flop manner and having a first abutment to retain the locking body in the locked position when the cover is in the closed position, and a second abutment to retain the locking body in the released position when the cover is in the open position. The locking body flip flops between the locked and released positions upon repeated engagement of the cover with the locking mechanism.
Abstract:
A latch mechanism comprising:(a) a mounting plate carrying a slot having a bottom and mouth,(b) a pivotably biased pawl mechanism comprising a top arm portion for pivoting from a position over the slot to a position spaced from it, a bottom arm portion and follower apparatus,(c) a ratchet mechanism biased for rotation and carrying a notch having a mouth and control apparatus for controlling the follower apparatus of the pawl mechanism, and(d) stop means for stopping rotation of the ratchet mechanism with the mouth of the notch proximate the mouth of the slot both directed towards the top arm portion of the pawl, the top arm portion normally positioned over the slot and being precluded from movement away from the slot unless the mouth of the notch and mouth of the slot are both directed towards the top arm portion.
