The addition-fragmentation agent is preferably free-radically cleavable. The addition-fragmentation agent preferably comprises at least two ethylenically unsaturated terminal groups, such as (meth)acTylate groups. In some embodiments, the addition-fragmentation agent has the formula: wherein R1, R2 and R3 are each independently Zm, -Q-, a (hetero)alkyl group or a (hetero)aryl group with the proviso that at least one of R1, R2 and R3 is Zm-Q-; Q is a linking group have a valence of m+1; Z is an ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable group; m is 1 to 6; each X1 is independently —O— or —NR4—, where R4 is H or C1-C4 alkyl; and n is 0 or 1. The present invention provides a broadband transmitting protective coating (10) including an AlGaP protective layer (14) deposited on an optical substrate (12) and an anti-reflection film (16) deposited on the AlGaP protective layer (14). The coating (10) is suitable for use with typical infrared and broadband optical substrate materials such as germanium or multi-spectral ZnS. In the case of a germanium substrate (12), the anti-reflection film (16), (16a) preferably consists of a single layer of hard carbon or alternating layers of hard carbon and silicon. In the case of a multi-spectral ZnS substrate (12a), the anti-reflection film (16b) preferably consists of layered Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 /TaO.sub.5 /LaF.sub.3 /MgF.sub.2. The protective coating (10) is preferably deposited on the optical substrate (12) by a metal organic chemical vapor deposition process wherein an initial layer of AlP is nucleated on the substrate (12) at a temperature of approximately 400.degree. C. The temperature of the substrate (12) is then raised to approximately 600.degree. C. and a layer of AlGaP (14) is grown on the substrate (12) to a preselected thickness. The AlGaP coated optical substrate (12) is then polished to a desired smoothness. The anti-reflection film (16) is then deposited on the AlGaP layer (14) using an RF chemical vapor deposition process or a thermal evaporation process.

In a first aspect, a method for treating hard tissue that includes: (a) applying to hard tissue a composition that includes a cationically active functional group, a free radically active functional group, and a polymerization initiator capable of initiating free radical polymerization, where the number of moles of cationically active functional groups per gram of composition is no greater than about 0.0075; and (b) exposing the composition to polymerization conditions to form an adhesive bonded to the hard tissue.In a second aspect, a method for treating hard tissue that includes: (a) applying to hard tissue a first polymerizable composition that includes a free radically active functional group and a polymerization initiator capable of initiating free radical polymerization, but is essentially free of polymerizable components having cationically active functional groups and is capable of forming an adhesive bonded to the hard tissue upon exposure to polymerization conditions; (b) applying a second polymerizable composition; and (c) exposing the second composition to polymerization conditions to form a hardened composition adhered to the hard tissue. The second composition includes (i) a cationically active functional group and (ii) an polymerization initiator capable of initiating cationic polymerization.

A dental composition is provided comprising (a) a part A comprising fluoroaluminosilicate glass that has been surface treated with agents selected from the group consisting of silane, silanol and combinations thereof, and at least one fatty acid, dimer thereof, or trimer thereof; and (b) a part B comprising at least one polyacid. The composition further comprises resin that can be curable or non-curable and at least one initiator. The composition exhibits adhesion to dentin, and the treated FAS glass contained therein does not settle out with time.
