Abstract: A flash freezing system is provided in which articles to be frozen are transported into, through and out of an elongated, thermally isolated chamber. Liquid nitrogen is sprayed onto the articles at one region of the chamber and flashes, at least partially, to gas which passes toward the end of the chamber into which the articles are introduced. Pumping means are provided together with a suction inlet and discharge outlet in the chamber to recirculate the gas at a high velocity and the freshly generated gas mixes with the recirculating gas in a high velocity stream impinging on each article. Means are provided to withdraw a portion of the recirculating gas from the end of the chamber into which the articles are introduced.

Abstract: To provide for the ease of cleaning of an elongated food treating chamber, such as a flash freezing chamber, which contains a conveyor for the passage of food therethrough, means are provided for separating the chamber into sections, opening a lid portion of each section and lifting the conveyor out of the chamber by means of lifting jacks which pass through the spaces between the separated sections. Another aspect of the invention provides means for accommodating differential thermal expansion or contraction of inner and outer walls of the chamber section by connecting said inner and outer walls only by cover caps and end caps which are slidably attached thereto.

Abstract: An apparatus for refrigerating, either freezing or chilling, articles and particularly food items using an improved distribution system for distributing the fluid cryogen uniformly across a refrigerating chamber that has an entrance, an exit and a conveyor for moving the articles in a path between the entrance and the exit. Abstract: A gas balance method and device are provided in a system for flash freezing in which a high velocity refrigerant gas circulates into, through and out of an open ended tunnel and it is desired to keep refrigerant gas loss through the ends of the tunnel at a minimum without permitting the entry of warm air into the system. The circulation system includes a fan having an inlet and an outlet connected respectively to different points spaced along the length of the tunnel, the outlet being connected through a plenum chamber parallel to the tunnel; and the gas balance is achieved by an adjustable passage from the plenum chamber to the tunnel which permits a portion of the circulating refrigerant gas to short circuit its full circulation path.
