Abstract:
An optical recording/reproducing apparatus includes an optical pickup and a signal processor. The optical pickup includes an optical splitting device which splits light emitted from a first light source into a main light beam and sub-light beams which are symmetrical with respect to the main light beam and irradiates the split light beams on a recording medium, and a light detection device which receives the main light beam and the sub-light beams reflected by the recording medium, so as to detect a tracking error signal in a three-beam method and one of a push-pull method and an improved push-pull method. The signal processor receives the detection signals output by the light detection device and detects the tracking error signal in the three-beam method and one of the push-pull method and the improved push-pull method, and otherwise selectively detects the tracking error signal in one of the three-beam method, the push-pull method and the improved push-pull method, so as to realize an optimal tracking servo-control. Since a selective use of one of the improved push-pull method, the push-pull method and the three-beam method can be made according to the type of an optical disc, the optimal tracking servo-control can be realized regardless of the depth of a pit in an optical disc during a reproduction of data from the optical disc, such as a non-rewritable optical disc.
Abstract:
A digital versatile disc (DVD) system compatible with a compact disc (CD), a single-layered DVD and a multi-layered DVD having respectively different structures. The DVD system discriminates a type of a disc loaded on a turntable according to the time and number represented by reflection characteristic curves of a focus error signal detected during performing an initial focus search operation for the disc. The DVD system calculates the size of a waveform of the focus error signal having a reflection characteristic curve obtained from a reflection layer of the disc in a focus-up section, and determines the disc as a multi-layered DVD having two reflection layers when two reflection characteristic curves exist and have a magnitude which is between a first reference value and a second reference value. Otherwise, the DVD system determines the disc as a CD being relatively thicker if the detection time of a reflection characteristic curve is longer than a predetermined time, and determines the disc as a single-layered DVD if the detection time is shorter than the predetermined time, based on the comparison result between the detection time of the reflection characteristic curve and the predetermined time. The DVD system quickly discriminates between a CD and a DVD, thereby providing an effect that error caused during performing a playback operation can be reduced in the DVD system compatible with the DVD and the CD.
Abstract:
A method for recording and reproducing a multi-session compact disc (CD) which allots a total TOC (TTOC) information storage area, including position information of respective sessions, to a specific area of the CD which enables high-speed access to data recorded on the CD. The disc recorded according to a multi-session mode recording operation includes a PMA area, a plurality of sessions respectively consisting of a lead-in area (LIN), a program area (PGM) and a lead-out area (LOT), and a total TOC area TTOC at the outermost circumferential area of the disc. A total TOC information storage area is allotted to the outermost circumferential area of the disc and the TOCs of respective sessions are recorded in the total TOC TTOC information storage area when recording is finished. High speed access to data recorded on the disc is performed by reading out position information from the total TOC area of the respective sessions.
Abstract:
An optical recording and reproducing apparatus for adjusting a tilt of an optical pickup in accordance with an amount of jitter of a reproduction signal, a tilt adjusting method therefor, and a recording control method. The optical recording and reproducing apparatus includes an optical pickup having an object lens, a tilt adjusting unit for adjusting a tilt angle of the object lens, a jitter detecting unit for detecting an amount of jitter of a reproducing signal generated by the optical pickup from a disk, and a tilt controlling unit for minimizing the amount of jitter by feeding the amount of jitter detected by the jitter detecting unit back to the tilt adjusting unit. According to the optical recording and reproducing apparatus, there is no need for a space in which a displacement sensor detecting the tilt angle of the optical pickup faces the disk.
Abstract:
A digital versatile disc (DVD) system compatible with a compact disc (CD), a single-layered DVD and a multi-layered DVD having respectively different structures. The DVD system discriminates a type of a disc loaded on a turntable according to the number of detections and magnitudes represented by reflection characteristic curves of a focus error signal detected during performing an initial focus search operation for the disc. In case the disc is a compact disc (CD) of 1.2 mm thickness, a focus error signal detected during performing a focus search of the disc is indicated as a reflection characteristic curve of a level between predetermined two reference values. In case of a DVD of 0.6 mm thickness, a single-layered structure is indicated as a reflection characteristic curve having a larger level than the two reference values, and a multi-layered structure is indicated as two reflection characteristic curves having a level between the two reference values, respectively. Using the above characteristics, the type of a disc is discriminated by checking the size and number of times of the reflection characteristic curves of the focus error signal obtained in the focus-up state during performing an initial focus search. Also, since a detection time of the focus error signal is checked, the type of a disc is more accurately discriminated. The present invention quickly discriminates the type of the CD and DVD, thereby providing an effect that error caused during performing a playback operation can be reduced in the DVD system compatible with the DVD and the CD.
