    摘要: A communication system having a wireless trunk for connecting multiple phone lines over wireless communication links to a cellular network comprises a central telephone switch, such as a private branch exchange or key system, connected through one or more trunk lines to a wireless access communication unit. The wireless access communication unit preferably comprises a separate subscriber interface for each trunk line from the central telephone switch. The wireless access communication unit collects data from each of the subscriber interfaces, formats the data into a format compatible with an over-the-air protocol, and transmits the information over one or more wireless channels to a cellular base station. The wireless access communication unit thereby connects calls received from the central telephone switch's trunk lines over a wireless trunk to a network. A controller within the wireless access communication unit interfaces the subscriber interfaces with a radio transceiver, and assists in the conversion of data from a format suitable for wireless transmission. Authentication is carried out separately for each of the subscriber interfaces, thereby allowing the wireless access communication unit to represent itself as multiple individual subscribers to the network. Upon each initial registration, each subscriber interface derives its own ciphering key from a stored user key and uses it thereafter for encryption and decryption.

    摘要: A virtual FDD base station comprises two base station sub-units each of which comprise a base station transmitter and a base station receiver. The first base station sub-unit transmits base-to-user messages to user stations only during a first half of a repeating time frame, and receives user-to-base messages from the user stations only during a second half of the time frame. The second base station sub-unit is preferably collocated with the first base station sub-unit and synchronized thereto, and transmits base-to-user messages to user stations only during half of the time frame, while receiving user-to-base messages from the user stations only during the other half of the time frame. Duplex communication channels are preferably defined by correlating a base transmit time slot with a user transmit time slot, which are separated by a sufficient amount of time to allow transmit/receive switching by a user station. The base station sub-units may be configured so that one of the sub-units transmits continuously and the other receives continuously, thereby providing full FDD functionality. In another embodiment, a TDD base station is adapted to support FDD communication. An over-the-air controller switches the transmit and receive operating frequency in accordance with a defined time slot communication pattern comprising base transmit time slots and user transmit time slots, and at the same time ensures that the base transmitter and base receiver are appropriately switched back and forth for connection with the base station antenna.

    摘要: A system and method including a flexible paging protocol which adjusts the allocation of resources for paging in response to the amount of actual paging traffic, by increasing resources for paging when paging traffic is heavy and decreasing them when paging traffic is light. A base station transmits a paging packet message over a paging broadcast channel containing a set of paging messages and a next page pointer. The next page pointer identifies when the next set of paging packet message will be transmitted. A user station monitoring the paging channel receives the next page pointer, and, if not being paged, goes to sleep until the next paging packet message is due. When paging traffic is light, paging messages are sent infrequently, freeing up base station resources and allowing the user station to remain asleep longer. When paging traffic is heavy, paging messages are sent more frequently, ensuring rapid response to the pages and reducing the probability of a missed call. The protocol is particularly well suited for use in TDMA environments. The next page pointer may be used in conjunction with a system which also employs a next slot pointer for increasing the speed of control traffic transactions. In a wireless packet-oriented communication system, the base station receives data packets over a backhaul connection, transmits a paging message to the mobile end system, divides the data packet into a sequence of message frames, and transmits the message frames to the mobile end system in assigned time slots.
