The insert also includes a bar-engaging member at the proximal end including a retainer defining a substantially semi-circular channel for receipt of a U-shaped portion of a bar. According to another embodiment, the insert includes a base at the distal end extending outwardly from the barrel to define an anchoring surface oriented perpendicular to the barrel axis. Longitudinal ribs on the barrel include segments arranged in series. Each segment of the rib extends radially to a distance that decreases with each succeeding segment such that each segment defines a bearing surface.

A molded plastic insert is intended for use in a concrete form for making a socket in a concrete structure adapted for engagement with a tool. The insert has an interior bore with an open end, a closed end and two opposed channels extending longitudinally from the open end toward the closed end to receive flanges of a tool. Each longitudinal channel terminates near the closed end in a generally annular channel adapted to receive one of the tool flanges such that the tool can be prevented from extraction from the insert by a quarter turn rotation of the tool flanges in the annular channels in the manner of a bayonet lock. The insert has on an exterior surface one or more generally annular ribs and opposite longitudinal projections corresponding to the interior longitudinal channels. The insert is constructed from two essentially identical molded half pieces.

A pocket, lid and shield for casting a pulling iron in a concrete structure are described. The pocket includes a slot reinforced with stiffening members for receiving the pulling iron. The pocket also includes a frangible support post for supporting the pulling iron when it is received in the pocket. Also described are embodiments of a shield, which include clipping members adapted to engage the stiffening members, for covering the slot, and a lid having a lip for engaging a peripheral groove in the pocket. Methods of over-molding a pulling iron cable are also described. According to the methods, a temporary seal, which can be used in over-molding a subsequent pulling iron cable, can be formed simultaneously with each over-molded product. During molding, the cable can be held in the center of a channel in the mold tool using a retractable magnetic pin.
