摘要:
A level sensor system for liquids and liquid slurries utilizes a capacitive probe which extends longitudinally into a liquid or liquid slurry containing vessel, and which may contain inner and outer sensors spaced from each other in an assembly with a flow control screen at its lower end to permit egress of liquid and exclusion of the solid slurry material, thereby enabling both liquid and slurry level to be determined. The capacitance presented by each sensor is converted into a digital output in repetitive cycles having a reference phase, where a reference voltage is generated by charging a reference capacitor while a counter is registering counts and until a pre-determined count is reached, and in a computing phase while counts are accumulated until the capacitance presented by the probe charges to a voltage equal to the reference voltage. The counts registered in the counter may be converted into level units and displayed or the difference between the liquid and slurry levels may be used to control a fluid system, as in the de-watering of waste, ion exchange resins and other waste filter media and sludges used in decontamination, water treatment in nuclear power plants.

A calorimetry system for measurement of the heating value of coal having a combustor 24 and a mixing unit 30 wherein heat from combustion gases is transferred to air. The system has a gravimetric feeder 64 for providing coal at a measured mass feed rate; the coal including any moisture present therein. The coal is pulverized in an air-driven mill or pulverizer 14 which is fed coal from the feeder and is separated by a cyclone separator 16 into two streams; one carrying coal and air mixed together in a controlled ratio to the combustor. The air which drives the separator, together with fines of the coal and moisture is fed to an afterburner 26 of the combustor so that the thermal dynamics of the entire coal stream is involved in the heating value measurement. Instrumentation measures the flow rates of cooling air, primary air which carries the coal streams into the combustor and secondary combustion air as well as the mass flow rates of the coal into the combustor as measured with the gravimetric feeder. A computer, thermocouples and pressure gauges controls the feeding of the coal and fuel gases (propane) during initiation of combustion, and for computing the heating value of the coal.

A bulk material feeder for improving material flow as the material makes the generally ninety degree (90°) transition from the downcomer to the generally horizontal conveyor. The downcomer presents an innermost divergent surface that extends upwardly from the discharge opening of the downcomer. The divergent surface may be defined by an inlet wall that is fit within the outer casing wall of the downcomer, or by the outer casing wall itself. The present invention also concerns the method of retrofitting an existing feeder with a divergent inlet.

There is provided an system and method for calibrating weigh assemblies of bulk material feeders using test chains of known weight and pitch. In particular, the present invention is a calibration checking system for a belt-type gravimetric feeder or conveyor having a weigh span section and comprises a continuous conveyor belt, at least one pair of support rollers and at least one weigh roller. A particular weigh roller is disposed under an upper strand of the conveyor belt and equidistant from each of the support rollers so that they are in planar alignment with one another. The calibration checking assembly also comprises a test chain having a chain pitch that is integrally divisible into the pitch of the weigh span section. In addition, portions of the conveyor belt on both sides of the weigh span are inclined equally at a single particular angle relative to the weigh span section. The calibration checking system further comprises a pair of load cells coupled to the ends of the weigh roller and a processor coupled to the loads cells for determining an optimal elevation for the weigh roller. The load cells and processor detect belt tension of the conveyor belt and analyze weigh load in relation to the belt tension.

There is provided a conveyor system having a conveyor belt for continuously transporting materials from a feed hopper to an end feed mechanism and a means for continuously weighing the bulk material as they pass over the weigh span of the conveyor belt. The conveyor system comprises a continuous conveyor belt disposed about a pair of pulleys for transporting a material from a feed hopper to a feed mechanism, at least one pair of support rollers, and a weigh assembly having a weigh roller means for continuously determining the weight of materials within the weigh span of the conveyor belt. The support rollers are positioned under the upper portion of the conveyor belt and spaced apart to define the boundaries of the weigh span. Moreover, the support rollers are disposed on opposite sides of the weigh roller wherein the pitch between each support roller and the weigh roller are identical and wherein the support rollers and the weigh roller are on the same horizontal plane.

In order to separate liquids from slurries containing particulate material, and particularly from slurries of water and spent ion exchange materials which are used for water conditioning in the operation of nuclear power plants and must be disposed of without any significant volume of free standing water therein, a vessel is provided which is filled with the slurry. The bottom of the vessel is conical and defines a region for the collection of water which passes thereto radially through a structure which filters the water and supports a bed of the particulate material thereon. A discharge tube extends longitudinally of the vessel into the region. A level sensor is disposed alongside the tube. A passage into the top of the vessel is provided for blowing air through the bed to force interstitial water through the bed into the region. A system of pumps and blowers is operated in accordance with the level of liquid and solid material in the vessel so as to provide for discharge of the liquid collected in the region, the formation of a tightly packed bed of particulate material and the blowing of air through the bed after substantially all the water has been discharged so as to free additional water and enable it to be discharged, thereby removing the liquid from the slurry and de-watering the material in a relatively short period of time to the extent required by governmental regulations for the disposal of low level radioactive waste materials (radwaste), for example in eight hours, and providing efficient utilization of the volume of the vessel in preparation for storage.
