A platen includes a top surface, and a plurality of adjustable shims located below the top surface and around an edge of the platen, wherein the adjustable shims can be raised and lowered to a desired height to compensate for different sizes or thicknesses of substrates. A platen may include a top surface, a plurality of adjustable height pads located around an edge of the top surface, and a motorized control mechanism located below the top surface and configured to raise and lower the plurality of adjustable height pads. A method of automatically shimming different sized substrates on a platen includes providing a plurality of motorized shims under a top surface of the platen, and raising and lowering the motorized shims based on a size or thickness of a substrate.

A method of determining communication resource availability within range of a user-centric mobile network is disclosed. In one embodiment the method comprises discovering communication resources within range of the user-centric mobile network, the communication resources including unique resource identifiers, and transmitting the unique resource identifiers and a user identifier to a server that is accessible from outside the user-centric mobile network. The communication resources may have associated therewith an available service and a current status and the method may further comprise transmitting available service information and current status information to the server. Also disclosed is a service discovery device for use in implementing the method.

Network traffic management is achieved based on automatically setting up a plurality of virtual networks (VNETs) within a single large virtual LAN. Multicast/broadcast traffic is confined to the VNET of the source, without imposing constraints on layer two addressing within the virtual LAN. VNETs are domains of users of a virtual LAN which include members of logical networks defined at layer three or higher. One method includes transferring a multi-destination packet originating from a particular node in the virtual LAN by tunnelling across a connectionless backbone network to a virtual net server. The virtual net server translates the multi-destination packet to a plurality of tunneled messages identifying nodes authorized to receive multi-destination packets from members of the particular VNET which originated the packet. The tunneled messages are then forwarded from the virtual net server to the authorized nodes.This way, multi-destination packets, such as advertisement or discovery packets, are confined to a single VNET. By confining the multi-destination packets to a single VNET, unicast packets generated within the virtual LAN are then also naturally confined to that VNET.

DLL devices are built with multiple MAC address instead of a single MAC address, and provide a multiple virtual DLL interfaces to the upper layers (3-7) in a computer. This results in a new class of multi-function computers for attachment to a network system which take advantage of the multiple virtual DLL interfaces, to increase performance of the respective functions executed by the computer. Thus, a new network interface control apparatus and a new class of multi-function computer systems for attachments to networks are provided. The memory in the medium access control device stores a plurality of additional network addresses in addition to the assigned network addresses. The address filtering logic includes circuits responsive to the additional network addresses, such as logic for blocking a particular frame on at least one of the plurality of data channels when the source and destination address of a particular frame are found in the additional addresses stored in the memory. The plurality of data channels served by the media access control device may reside on a single physical interface, or in independent physical interfaces as suits the needs of a particular design. A high performance design would include independent buffering and queuing structures for each of the data channels. An alternative design may include shared buffering and queuing structures for a plurality of functional modules in the connected computer which have independent side network addresses.

The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for facilitating high bandwidth transmissions of data through a computer network. The invention uses communications through a routed network, such as the Internet, to establish a communication pathway through a connection-oriented network, such as an ATM or a frame relay network. This technique effectively exploits the universal addressing structure of routed networks, such as the Internet, to establish high bandwidth connections through connect-oriented networks. The present invention also facilitates selection of a connection-oriented network for data transmissions from a plurality of connection-oriented networks based upon parameters such as availability and costs. One embodiment of the present invention facilitates connections through mixed connection-oriented and routed networks, as well as through multicast networks. Another embodiment multiplexes several flows of data into a single connection through a connection-oriented network.

A system for interconnecting networks transparently extends the multiprotocol routing functionality of a router across a communication link to a remote LAN, while requiring a device on the remote LAN which operates independent of the higher layer protocol suites. A boundary router, having a local routing interface coupled to the first network, and a remote routing interface coupled to the communication link, provides the higher level protocol suite services for routing frames of data to terminals in the first and second networks. A routing adapter extends the remote routing interface of the boundary router transparently across the communication link to the second network.

Methods and apparatus for exchanging frames between bridges distribute load sharing in a communications network. The communications network is of the kind in which bridges, and related stations and local LANS, e.g. Ethernet LANs and 802 LANs, can be linked by paths in a plurality of sub-networks and wherein the bridges are linked to support a Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) which elects one bridge as a root and then with respect to said root, computes and utilizes one and only one loop-free set of primary paths between all bridges. Remaining paths, i.e. paths other than said STP primary paths, between the bridges are examined as possible sub-network paths for a Distributed Load Sharing (DLS) configuration in which frames exchanged between certain stations can utilize more than the STP one set of primary paths. Certain ones of the remaining paths are selected as DLS paths under certain conditions and frame are routed over a selected DLS path only when those frames meet certain criteria.
