摘要: Observation platform for using structured communications. A signal from a first communication device is received at a second communication device associated with a computer system, wherein a first characteristic of the signal corresponds to an audible source and a second characteristic of the signal corresponds to information indicative of a geographic position of the first communication device. A first user associated with the first communication device is recognized at the computer system. Context information for the signal is derived at the computer system associated with the second communication device. A copy of at least one characteristic of the signal is stored in a storage medium, wherein the copy of at least one characteristic of the signal is available for developing performance metrics. The signal is relayed to a destination derived from the context information.

摘要: The present invention allows telephone subscriber loops carrying data traffic between computer systems to be switched to an alternative connection through a data network, thereby unloading data traffic from the telephone network. The invention operates by means of a break switch, which selectively switches a plurality of subscriber loops between a central office switching system and a data network. The break switch is coupled to a concentrator which takes a plurality of inputs from the break switch and connects them to a smaller number of modems in a modem pool. The concentrator allows a subscriber line to connect to different types of modems within the modem pool, depending upon requirements of a particular subscriber line user. The modem pool connects through a network interface to a packet-switched network, such as the Internet. A number of different methods can be used to transmit a command to switch a subscriber loop from the central office switching system to the packet-switched network. A loop current detector, which is coupled between the plurality of subscriber loops and the break switch, can monitor on/off hook status of the subscriber loop in order to determine whether to switch the connection to the data network. Alternatively, the command to perform the switching can originate from a remote host which transmits the command through the data network to the break switch.

摘要: The present invention allows a modem to operate in both the voice band, from 300 to 3400 Hz, and also in the ADSL band, which extends above 3400 Hz. Unlike conventional ADSL modems, the present invention avoids the computationally-intensive operations required to extract all the available band of a telephone subscriber loop. Consequently, the present invention can be implemented with low-cost modifications to existing voice band modems. The present invention thereby offers higher data transfer rates at a fraction of the cost of more complicated ADSL modems. The present invention also provides bypassing functions, which allow communications through a modem located at the telephone central office side of a subscriber loop to be switched through a packet-switched network, which is capable of accommodating high data transfer rates, instead of a central office switching system, which generally imposes unnecessary limitations on data transfer rates.

摘要: The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for facilitating high bandwidth transmissions of data through a computer network. The invention uses communications through a routed network, such as the Internet, to establish a communication pathway through a connection-oriented network, such as an ATM or a frame relay network. This technique effectively exploits the universal addressing structure of routed networks, such as the Internet, to establish high bandwidth connections through connect-oriented networks. The present invention also facilitates selection of a connection-oriented network for data transmissions from a plurality of connection-oriented networks based upon parameters such as availability and costs. One embodiment of the present invention facilitates connections through mixed connection-oriented and routed networks, as well as through multicast networks. Another embodiment multiplexes several flows of data into a single connection through a connection-oriented network.

摘要: DLL devices are built with multiple MAC address instead of a single MAC address, and provide a multiple virtual DLL interfaces to the upper layers (3-7) in a computer. This results in a new class of multi-function computers for attachment to a network system which take advantage of the multiple virtual DLL interfaces, to increase performance of the respective functions executed by the computer. Thus, a new network interface control apparatus and a new class of multi-function computer systems for attachments to networks are provided. The memory in the medium access control device stores a plurality of additional network addresses in addition to the assigned network addresses. The address filtering logic includes circuits responsive to the additional network addresses, such as logic for blocking a particular frame on at least one of the plurality of data channels when the source and destination address of a particular frame are found in the additional addresses stored in the memory. The plurality of data channels served by the media access control device may reside on a single physical interface, or in independent physical interfaces as suits the needs of a particular design. A high performance design would include independent buffering and queuing structures for each of the data channels. An alternative design may include shared buffering and queuing structures for a plurality of functional modules in the connected computer which have independent side network addresses.
