    Abstract: A multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) communication system is configured to perform user scheduling and associated precoding. The system includes multiple terminals and at least one base station configured to communicate with the terminals. The base station is operative to obtain channel vectors for respective ones of the terminals, to select a subset of the terminals based on magnitudes of the respective channel vectors, to compute a precoding matrix using the channel vectors of the selected subset of terminals, and to utilize the preceding matrix to control transmission to the selected subset of terminals. The system may be, for example, a time-division duplex (TDD) multi-user MIMO system in which the multiple terminals comprise autonomous single-antenna terminals.

    Abstract: A method, wireless device and computer program product for expanding the coverage of a cellular network. A wireless device (e.g., cellular telephone) is able to communicate with a base station in a cell of the cellular network over a non-cellular interface via another wireless device in the cell through the use of multi-hopping. A wireless device may request permission to communicate with the base station over a non-cellular interface via hopping off another wireless device when its signal strength is below a threshold. Alternatively, a wireless device may receive a request to communicate with the base station over a non-cellular interface via hopping off the wireless device that sent the request when that wireless device has excess capacity in its bandwidth with the base station. By enabling wireless devices to communicate with a base station in such a manner, the effective coverage area of the cellular network is expanded and the effective capacity of the cellular network is improved.

    Abstract: A wireless communications device operates in a system where communications resources may be used by multiple devices concurrently. A device, with an acquired set of recurring time intervals, selects, e.g., pseudo-randomly, an interval or intervals to be used as a combined data transmission and channel measurement time interval. The other time intervals in its set are to be used as data transmission time intervals. The combined use type interval facilitates the measurement of interference on the device's channel while still allowing the device to transmit some data during the interval. A combined use interval includes a first portion for data transmission and a second portion for channel measurement. In some embodiments, the first portion is fixed size and the second portion occurs at the very end of the interval. In some embodiments, the duration of the first portion is varied over time such that the channel measurement start time varies.
