The object of the present invention is to provide a coated printing paper used for ink jet printing machines, which has an ink fixing property and ink absorption property corresponding to ink jet printing, which inhibits poor dot diffusion, and which is excellent in abrasion resistance property of printed portions. According to the present invention, provided is a coated printing paper comprising a base paper, an undercoating layer which is applied on at least one surface of the base paper and contains a pigment and a binder, and one or more coating layers on the undercoating layer, wherein the base paper contains at least one selected from a cationic resin and a multivalent cation salt; the uppermost coating layer contains at least a colloidal silica; and the 75° gloss according to JIS Z8741 of the surface of the uppermost coating layer is 40% or more.

The present invention provides a printing method using a silver salt lithographic printing plate obtained by imagewise exposing a silver salt lithographic printing plate precursor comprising a support and, provided thereon, at least a silver halide emulsion layer and a physical development nuclei layer and then subjecting the exposed printing plate precursor to silver complex diffusion transfer development and using a dampening composition containing a nonionic surface-active agent represented by the following formula �I!: ##STR1## wherein R represents an alkyl group of 1-9 carbon atoms, and n.sub.1 and n.sub.2 are mol numbers necessary for the polymer having an average molecular weight of 250 or more, and n.sub.1 /n.sub.2 is 0.5-2, and a polymer represented by the following formula �II!: ##STR2## wherein m is a number which provides a number-average molecular weight of 2000-50000 for the polymer. The apparatus for coating a lithographic printing plate or a photosensitive material (M) with a processing liquid comprises first and second pairs of feed rollers (41,42: 44,45) for feeding the photosensitive arterial along a predetermined path. A coating roller (125) is provided therebetween. Guide members (48, 49) contact the bottom surface of the photosensitive material and to guide the photosensitive material. The contacts of the guide members and the photosensitive material are at the levels higher than the coating level at which the processing liquid is applied to the photosensitive material to prevent uneven coating of the photosensitive material with the processing liquid after the trailing edge of the photosensitive material has passed the first pairs of the feed rollers (41,42).

The present invention provides a treating solution for lithographic printing plates having ink receptive silver images in which the compound having a mercapto group or a thione group and an oleophilic group which is added to improve ink-receptivity can be solubilized without damaging the ink-receptivity and with using no solvent and in which hydrophilic colloid particles are excellent in time stability. The solution contains at least one alkanolamine and a compound having a mercapto group or a thione group and an oleophilic group and being free from sulfo group and carboxyl group. Preferably, the solution additionally contains an amino acid and hydrophilic colloid particles which are inorganic fine particles having an average particle size of 0.1 .mu.m or less.
