A method and device for inserting radioactive radiation sources into applicators and for withdrawing the radiation source and depositing them in at least one shielded loading and/or storage station. To remove a radiation source from the loading and/or storage station a traction wire with a coupling effective in the direction of traction is advanced via a fork and a switch into the loading and/or storage station, coupled with the radiation source and withdrawn as far as a stop where it is uncoupled and the traction wire is withdrawn through the fork. To introduce the radiation source into the applicator, on the other hand, a thrust wire having a coupling effective only in the direction of thrust is brought via the fork up to the radiation source and, carrying the radiation source with it, is advanced via the switch into the applicator and withdrawn again leaving the source in the applicator.

An irradiation apparatus has at least one exchangeable radiation source that may be moved by means of a transport cable between at least one rest position and at least one irradiation position and a long-distance transport container for radiation sources to be exchanged. In order to reduce the danger of control errors, the rest position is located inside the long-distance transport container and the transport container forms or may form an integral part of the irradiation apparatus. For that purpose, interface elements are provided on the transport container and other parts of the irradiation apparatus. By winding and unwinding the transport cable on and from a feeding drum with a cable-receiving groove at least partially covered by a pressing strip, particularly thin transport cables may be used, so that the width of the pressing strip substantially corresponds to the width of the cable-receiving groove. The pressing strip is helically wound in the cable-receiving groove around the feeding drum, in the axial or radial direction with respect to the feeding drum, and the cable-receiving groove is thus covered in a substantially uninterrupted manner. Means for lifting, preferably also for deflecting and lowering again the pressing strip, may be moved along the transport cable in relation to the feeding drum in order to let free an output joint for the transport cable from the feeding drum.

A radiation treatment apparatus comprising a radiation shielding container (a rest container) having a plurality of first openings. A plurality of radiator holders are connected to respective drive cables, the radiator holders being axially insertable and removable from the openings by means of the drive cables through flexible hoses connected to the container at the openings. A common single drive unit is connected to all of the drive cables for joint movement of all the drive cables and therewith for joint insertion and joint removal of the radiator holders into and from the openings via the drive cables. A second radiation shielding container (an intermediate container) has a plurality of second openings for selectively receiving respective of the radiator holders. Hose coupling elements provide detachable through-connections of the free ends of the flexible hoses selectively to a respective one of the second openings or a respective hollow probe for treatment. The drive simultaneously inserts the radiator holders selected for treatment into the respective hollow probes and for simultaneously inserting the radiator holders not selected for treatment into the respective second openings, whereby the radiator holders not required at the time for treatment are guided through the respective flexible hoses into the respective second openings in the second radiation shielding container while the radiation holders required at the time for treatment are guided into the respective hollow probes.
