摘要: Spacers for use in brachytherapy, radiotherapy, and other medical therapy, which can be used to improve a patient's outcome, assist in treating difficult cases and/or combine multiple modalities that are currently performed separately into a single procedure. In accordance with an embodiment, a spacer is formed of an encapsulating material in a generally cylindrical or elongated shape. One or more regions are formed within the spacer for receiving and retaining therapeutic loads, such as radiation sources and/or pharmaceutical therapeutic loads, and/or any other substances that a physician might select to treat a patient, such as drug liquids, powder or particles (e.g., microparticles or nanoparticles), with the particles or powders combined with binders, such as polyacrylamide, that are selected to retain and gradually disperse the powder or particles at a desired rate. Such regions can be formed at various locations within the spacer, and can have various shapes depending on the particular design and intended usage, including, for example, bores, end cavities, wells, ports, slots and/or pockets. The outer surface of the encapsulating material can optionally include one or more fins, ribs or other physical protuberances or features that improve the fixity of the spacer when implanted within a patient's body. When implanted into the body, the spacer helps provide proper placement and spacing such as symmetrical and/or asymmetrical placement and spacing of the radiation sources and/or pharmaceutical therapeutic loads.

摘要: The present invention, in an exemplary embodiment, provides a therapeutic medical appliance, delivery device and method of use. In particular, plug therapeutic medical appliances are provided that allow for the interventional treatment of pulmonary disorders such as defects characterized by pulmonary blebs and/or diffused destructive parenchymal disease. The plug therapeutic medical appliances themselves combine many of the excellent characteristics of both silicone and metal therapeutic medical appliances while eliminating the undesirable ones. In particular, these therapeutic medical appliances are preferably self-expanding in nature and allow the predetermined differential selection of relative hardness/softness of regions of the therapeutic medical appliance to provide additional patient comfort. An exemplary embodiment also provides a family of delivery devices that facilitate flexibility, durability and/or proper installation of one or more medical appliances in a single procedure. Moreover, the preferred embodiment of the delivery device provides for the reloading of the delivery device with additional medical appliances for additional interventional procedures.

摘要: The disclosure is directed to radiation catheter devices, methods for controlled application of irradiation to tissue at a body site, such as a cavity formed after removal of tissue, e.g. cancer, using such radiation catheter devices, solutions for forming a more lubricious luminal surface and method for lining lumens of such devices to improve the frictional characteristics thereof. The catheter device includes a flexible elongated shaft which is formed of low durometer polymeric material, which can be readily folded or coiled for securing the shaft to or under the skin of the patient and a radiation lumen lined with high durometer polymeric material and finely divided particulate to improve the frictional characteristics. The elongated shaft has at least one inner lumen for receiving a radiation source which has a layer of high durometer polymeric material that provides lower surface friction to facilitate advancement of a radiation source therein.

摘要: Apparatus for delivering brachytherapy to a target tissue region includes an elongate body including a proximal end, a distal end sized for introduction into a tissue tract and carrying a plurality of elongate members including pathways for receiving a source of radiation. The elongate members are movable between collapsed and expanded configurations. During use, a tract is created through tissue, and the elongate body carrying the elongate members is advanced through the tract into a target location with the elongate members in the collapsed configuration. The elongate members are directed to the expanded configuration at the target location, and radiation is delivered to treat tissue at the target location, e.g., by introducing one or more radiation sources along the pathways.

摘要: A radiographic composition for promoting the formation of clots in blood includes a zeolite and iodine. A device for promoting the clotting of blood at an internal wound site includes a catheter; a delivery instrument insertable through the catheter; a radioopaque blood clotting agent that deliverable through the delivery instrument; and a positive pressure apparatus that can dispense the blood clotting agent to the wound site through the delivery instrument. A system for radiographically imaging an internally bleeding wound includes means for delivering a radioopaque blood clotting agent and means for radiographically imaging the radioopaque blood clotting agent. A method of imaging an internally bleeding wound includes the steps of inserting a catheter into a patient; advancing the catheter to a point adjacent the bleeding wound; depositing a radioopaque zeolite at the bleeding wound; and imaging the radioopaque zeolite to monitor blood-clotting caused by the zeolite.

摘要: In cancer brachytherapy treatment, a small californium-252 neutron source capsule is attached to a guide cable using a modified crimping technique. The guide cable has a solid cylindrical end, and the attachment employs circumferential grooves micromachined in the solid cable end. The attachment was designed and tested, and hardware fabricated for use inside a radioactive hot cell. A welding step typically required in other cable attachments is avoided.

摘要: Apparatus includes an elongated flexible catheter having proximal and distal end portions, with fluidly connected coaxial lumens extending therebetween, and a diameter sufficiently small for insertion into a patient's intraluminal passageways. One or more treating elements are positionable within one of the lumens and movable between the proximal and distal portions by fluid flowing through the lumens. The distal portion includes a distal guide wire lumen having a proximal exit port distally located relative to the treatment elements positioned at the distal portion. To simultaneously achieve stiffness along the proximal portion and flexibility along the distal portion, the inner and/or outer coaxial members may be of more than one-piece construction. The inner and/or outer members may also be stepped or bumped in diameter to decrease the pressure and fluid transit times within the catheter. A balloon may be added to the distal portion for positioning the catheter or performing angioplasty.

摘要: An automatic injection device has piston holders holding cylinder pistons and plural systems of heads having a drive mechanism for moving the piston holders forward and backward so that the device can hold a plurality of syringes and operates injection or suction in each syringe independently. This device also has a mechanism for prohibiting the backward-moving of the piston holder of a second head when the piston holder of a first head is in a forward-moving state and the piston holder of the second head is in a stopped state. This structure effectively prevents liquid from being undesirably mixed and the injection amount thereof from becoming less accurate.
