    摘要: A gear assembly comprising a lower gear wheel (18) and an upper gear wheel (19) contained within a housing (10, 11), the lower gear wheel being supported by bearings (20, 21) and the upper gear wheel by bearings (22, 23). The housing has wall portions (32, 34, 35, 36) which extend close to the periphery of the gear wheels so that lubricating oil, fed from a chamber (30), is entrained by the gear wheels and carried to the top of gear wheel (19) where it is diverted and fed through passages to the bearings (22, 23). Further oil carried by the upper gear wheel is diverted to passages leading to the bearings (20, 21), and excess circulating oil is returned to the chamber (30) by way of an opening (39).

The method includes the step of adjusting a rotational speed of a portion of a second axle assembly using a clutching device to impart energy to a lubricant within the second axle assembly. A controller in communication with a power source of the vehicle adjusts an operating condition of the power source to facilitate moving the clutching device. The power distribution unit includes an inter-axle differential capable being placed in a locked condition by the clutching device and of accommodating a rotational difference between a first output gear and a second output gear with the inter-axle differential.

    摘要: A power transfer unit for a vehicle is provided having a transfer sleeve, a flanged ring gear, an output shaft, and a clutching assembly. The transfer sleeve, the flanged ring gear, and the clutching assembly are disposed in a housing about an axle shaft connected to a center differential. The transfer sleeve is drivingly engaged with a carrier of the center differential and the flanged ring gear is disposed about the transfer sleeve and drivingly engaged with the output shaft. The clutching assembly includes a locking collar and a clutch. The clutch may be engaged to transfer torque through the transfer sleeve to the output shaft through the flanged ring gear and the locking collar may be engaged to drivingly engage the transfer sleeve with the output shaft through the flanged ring gear.

The limited slip differential assembly may be associated with the front axle, the rear axle, or the driveline between the front and rear axles. The drive system further includes a friction clutch assembly for selectively engaging and disengaging an input member with an output member of the differential assembly, a fluid clutch actuator for selectively frictionally and variably loading the clutch assembly, and a fluid pump that is a common source of pressurized fluid for the fluid clutch actuator and the existing hydraulic system of the motor vehicle other than the fluid clutch actuator of the drive system. The fluid clutch actuator is actuated by fluid pressure generated by the fluid pump.
