    摘要: An electrically powered node of a telecommunications system has a battery power backup associated with its power control unit. Under normal conditions it is maintained fully charged by means of trickle currents from the mains power feeds to each of a number of mains—connected customer equipments, by way of the “final drop” to the distribution point. These trickle currents are controlled by the respective power control units, to prevent overcharging. Using an electrical copper connection provided in parallel with the fibre connection, a battery backup can also be maintained in nodes further towards the exchange. The feeds are reversible, so that if a power outage removes the power supply from the customer premises, a “lifeline” plain telephone service between the exchange and the telephone handset is maintained using the local battery backup in the remote nodes. By limiting the service to simple telephony, the battery power can be sufficient to maintain the service for a reasonable duration. The power management systems can be used to transfer charge from one battery to another over the network according to the usage, or remaining life, of each battery.

    摘要: A digital subscriber line arrangement includes a downstream modem, an upstream modem and a copper pair connection between the modems. Each modem includes electrical length estimation function code means which causes the respective modem to measure the attenuation of signals transmitted by the other modem at a plurality of different frequencies, and to combine these measurements, or functions thereof, together to form a combined attenuation measure and to use this combined measure to form an electrical length estimation, KL0bis. The downstream modem is operable to transmit its electrical length estimation to the upstream modem, and the upstream modem is operable to generate a definitive electrical length estimation in dependence upon both the received estimation from the downstream modem and the estimation made by the upstream modem. Having generated a definitive electrical length estimation, the upstream modem is operable to transmit this to the downstream modem. Finally, the downstream modem includes Upstream Power Back Off mask generation function code means which causes the downstream modem to use the received definitive electrical length estimation to generate an upstream power back off mask for use in controlling the amount of power used when transmitting upstream signals over the copper pair connection to the upstream modem in one or more upstream transmission bands.

    摘要: An electrically powered node of a telecommunications system has a battery power backup associated with its power control unit.     摘要: To facilitate acquisition of lock in a multiple sub-channel carrier scheme, a plurality of time-continuous pilots (102) on known sub-channels are made available to an addressed unit across the frequency spectrum. The addressed unit is then able to select one of these pilots for training purposes and specifically for frequency and phase acquisition (106). The selection is based, typically, on the pilot with either the best signal to noise ratio or the first pilot to satisfy the minimum quality requirements for effective training. Discontinuous carriers, of which there can be several, are then used to identify a symbol boundary at the addressed unit. Once acquisition has been established, the pilots can, if desired, be released to carry low-bit rate traffic, although it is preferable to retain pilot tones for use within the system. Selection of the pilot from one of a number of alternative sub-channels distributed through the spectrum therefore ensures accurate synchronisation irrespective of whether portions of the spectrum are generally noisy and unclean.

    摘要: A subscriber's telephone installation comprises a plurality of telephone sets coupled in parallel to a subscriber loop so as to provide a voice facility, and a data modern coupled to the subscriber loop so as to provide data facilities at a frequency above that employed for said voice facility. Some or preferably all telephone sets are provided with a respective filter arrangement incorporating series connected inductive and parallel connected capacitive elements for rejecting selected frequencies from the telephone set. The filter also incorporates a switch responsive to current drawn from the line for selectively enabling and disabling the filter arrangement when the telephone set is respectively in its off-hook condition or in its on-hook condition.

    摘要: A splitter separates telephony traffic (POTS) from digital subscriber line (ADSL) traffic occupying a higher frequency band. The splitter comprises a low-pass filter for passing the telephony traffic, the low-pass filter being operable to vary its filtering response between a first low-pass response for use during telephony speech traffic, and a second, more restrictive, low-pass response for use during at least part of the time that telephony signalling traffic is present. During speech traffic a filter is used which provides a good impedance match with a telephony terminal or linecard so as to minimize detrimental effects on sidetone and echo performance which may impair a user's speech quality. The filter response can be varied according to a detected property of the telephony traffic, such as amplitude or rate of change of amplitude of the traffic.

The termination unit provides a good electrical connection between two conductors that carry data signals between the access network and a user modem, and insulates the other conductor or conductors from the incoming pair of conductors. A user modem connects to the termination unit to modem connector and is operable to transmit data signals onto and to receive data signals from the data carrying conductors as well as telephony signals onto and from a pair of modem-side telephony signal carrying conductors. A cross-connection unit has a connection portion that connects with a telephone connector.
