A connector having a hermaphroditic contact is disclosed. Such hermaphroditic contact extends longitudinally and is formed as a unitary body from a conductive material. The contact has a base residing in a plane and extending longitudinally and traversely in the plane, a blade arm extending longitudinally from the base and generally in the plane of the base, and a spring arm extending longitudinally from the base alongside the blade arm. The spring arm is springingly displaceable toward at least a first side of the plane of the base. To electrically couple first and second generally identical ones of the contact, the bases of the first and second contacts are aligned to be co-planar, and the blade arm of the each contact is aligned to face toward the spring arm of the other contact. The first and second contacts are then moved together such that the blade arm of each contact encounters the spring arm of the other contact. Thereafter, the first and second contacts are further moved together such that the blade arm of each contact displaces the spring arm of the other contact toward the first side of the plane of the base of the other contact.

The first base has at least one aperture therein and a hinge assembly. The hinge assemblies of the first and second bases allow movement of the first base relative to the second base. A method of securing the electrical component to the substrate including the steps of: inserting the component into a cassette; mounting the housing to the substrate; connecting a portion of the conductive elements of the electrical component with a portion of the contacts; and connecting the remainder of the conductive elements of the electrical component with the remainder of the contacts. A contact having a retention portion, a tail portion and a pair of beams. The beams each have a first portion which displaces the beam from opposite sides of the plane of the retention portion and a second portion extending from, and canted relative to, the first portion. The second portions interact to receive a mating contact therebetween.

The plug and the receptacle can be made form the same base pieces to accommodate different stack heights. If a greater stack height is needed, spacers can be used in the plug and the receptacle to accommodates a greater selected stack height. The plug and the receptacle both include a base having an interstitial diamond recesses in which the solder balls are disposed and in which one end of a contact is inserted. The plug may further include a plug cover that can be connected to the base, and the receptacle may include a receptacle cover that fits over its base. The plug can have a plug contact assembly, and the receptacle can have a receptacle contact assembly. The plug and the receptacle can be mated by mating the plug cover to the receptacle cover and the receptacle contacts to the plug contacts. If a larger stack height is desired, a spacer can be attached to the base of either or both the plug or the receptacle to achieve a larger stack height.
