Abstract: A nonwoven textile fabric comprising a batt of nonwoven filaments and having at least a portion of the filaments extending outwardly from one face of the batt to form a raised pile. In one embodiment at least a portion of the filaments are fused together on one side of the batt forming a fused face, and the raised pile extends outwardly from the fused face. In another embodiment, the batt has a fused face on each side thereof and the raised pile extends outwardly from one of these fused faces. In still another embodiment, the batt has a single fused face and the raised pile extends outwardly from the side of the batt opposite the fused face. The textile fabrics are also disclosed with an adhesive and/or a backcoating layer on the side opposite the raised pile. Method and apparatus for the production of the nonwoven textile fabrics are also disclosed which employ needle punching the nonwoven batt with forked needles to provide the raised pile.

Abstract: Nonwoven fabric is fed at a first rate into the bite between a first shredding element and a stationary working surface. The first shredding element has a plurality of projections which penetrate the fabric and at least substantially shred the fabric as the first shredding element is moved past the working surface at a second rate substantially greater than said first rate. The at least substantially shredded fabric then passes between the first shredding element and a second shredding element, the latter being driven at a third rate substantially different from said second rate to effect additional shredding and to separate the resulting staple fibers. A forced draft fan pulls air past the fabric as the fabric is being worked, to maintain the fabric temperature below the fusion temperature of the fibers.

Abstract: A physiological monitoring apparatus comprising a cellular phone handset connected to a cellular phone network is disclosed. The handset includes a removable battery container (12) having a physiological monitoring device (14) contained therein as well as a battery power source (13). The battery power source (13) provides power for the operation of the handset (11) as well as providing power for the physiological monitoring device (14). The battery container (12) has detectors (15) located on its outer surface, communicating with the physiological monitoring device (14) through apertres in the battery container (12). Acoustic coupling means (18) are adapted to couple tones produced by the physiological monitoring device (14) with a sound microphone of the cellular phone handset. The physiological monitoring device (14) is activated by placing it against the chest of a patient and the cellular phone handset is used to connect to a remote monitoring station via the cellular phone network. The cellular phone handset sends an electromagnetic signal corresponding to the acoustically coupled tonal signal produced by the physiological monitoring device (14).
