A cable deployment and storage system includes a cable reel mounting device, and a cable reel for carrying a length of cable. The cable reel includes a hub that may be rotatably mounted on the cable reel mounting device during deployment of the length of cable, a pair of inner end flanges carried by respective opposing ends of the hub, and a pair of removable outer end flanges carried by respective inner end flanges to contain the length of cable therebetween during deployment. The outer end flanges may thereafter be removed to reduce a size of the cable reel. The pair of inner end flanges may store any remaining length of cable therebetween after deployment. The cable may include connectors installed at each end during manufacturing.

A cable modem communicates the timing of the arrival of certain packets (such as TCP ACK packets) to a cable modem termination system. This timing feature is useful in methods for increasing the throughput in the downstream direction by eliminating TCP ACKs backing up at a cable modem. In particular, a cable modem termination system implementing an unsolicited bandwidth grant service in which unsolicited grants of bandwidth are sent by the cable modem termination system to the cable modem. The grants of bandwidth are timed to arrive at the cable modem simultaneous with or shortly after the arrival of the TCP ACK from an end station connected to the cable modem. Several methods of calculating or predicting when the unsolicited grants should be sent to the cable modem are described. The method is also applicable to other types of packets, such as voice packets from a end station implementing a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) application.

A method and system for optimizing performance in a data-over-cable system. The method includes determining parameters for data transmission on an upstream channel of the data-over-cable system, and negotiating use of the parameters. A measurement is made of a signal-to-noise ratio (“SNR”) on the upstream channel. Associated with the SNR and a target packet-error-ratio (“PER”) are parameters that provide optimal data throughput. The parameters, such as symbol rate, type of modulation, or amount of error correction, are used to construct a message that is sent to the cable modems. The message instructs the cable modems to reconfigure themselves to transmit according to the parameters. The reconfiguration helps ensure optimal performance.

A method of preventing collisions when a cable modem re-registers with a cable modem termination system on a cable television network following failure of a primary communications channel between the cable modem and the cable modem termination system. The method provides a service identifier that is transmitted to the cable modem during initial registration of the cable modem with the cable modem termination system. Upon registration of the cable modem with the cable modem termination system, the cable modem stores the service identifier in memory. After failure of the primary channel, the cable modem reinitializes on the cable network and waits for transmission of a bandwidth allocation map from the cable modem termination system. When the cable modem receives the bandwidth allocation map, it determines if the map contains a unicast initial maintenance opportunity. When the map contains a initial maintenance opportunity having a unicast associated identifier, the cable modem compares the service identifier stored in its memory with a unique service identifier contained in the initial maintenance opportunity information element of the bandwidth allocation map. When the service identifiers match, the cable modem then uses the initial maintenance opportunity having the unicast associated identifier contained in the information element of the bandwidth allocation map to re-register with the network.

A head-end in a data-over-cable system transmits a multicast message in a downstream channel to all the cable modems in a particular MAC layer. The message includes an address field that contains an upstream channel multicast MAC address that identifies a particular channel, and is used to send a multicast message for which only cable modems transmitting in the upstream direction in that channel are to respond. When the message is received by the cable modems, the cable modems compare the upstream channel multicast MAC address with addresses stored in a memory. If a match is found, indicating that the cable modem happens to transmit in the upstream direction in the particular channel, it processes the message. If no match is found, the message is discarded. The upstream channel multicast MAC address helps noise avoidance or redundancy problems associated with a particular channel to be quickly remedied, and avoids the head-end from having to send out a large number of unicast messages in order to communicate with all the modems sharing a given upstream channel.

An upstream channel change for a cable modem in a data-over-cable system is achieved via an upstream bandwith allocation map message sent from a cable modem termination system to cable modems, instead of requiring an exchange of upstream channel change request and reply messages. The result is that the upstream channel change can be made essentially immediately, in a deterministic fashion. As such, the upstream channel change method is particularly useful for time-sensitive applications, such as Internet telephony, VoIP, and Internet video on demand services. Load balancing can also be achieved more efficiently.

A message structure is provided for assigning transmission profiles to individual modems for modem transmissions in an upstream direction, on a modem by modem basis. The profiles define a set of transmission parameters, e.g., forward error correction information, symbol rate, frequency, modulation type, etc. that the modem should use to optimize their transmission in the upstream direction in order to maximize throughput. The invention is applicable to both wireless and land-based communications systems, particularly those adhering to the Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specifications (“DOCSIS”)—Radio Frequency Interface Specification standard, or other standards which are analogous to the DOCSIS standard. The message structure can consist of two parts—a first part that defines a plurality of different types of transmission profiles, and a second part that assigns a particular profile to a modem. In a DOCSIS embodiment, the first part is contained in a UCD packet and the second part is contained in a MAP packet.

An aerial fiber optic cable system includes a distribution cable extending along an aerial route, a splice enclosure connected to the distribution cable along the aerial route, and a first sub-distribution fiber optic system extending along the aerial route in a first direction away from the fiber optic splice enclosure. The first sub-distribution system may include spaced apart fiber optic taps along the aerial route, a first sub-distribution fiber optic cable between the fiber optic splice enclosure and a first fiber optic tap, and at least one second sub-distribution fiber optic cable between adjacent fiber optic taps so that the first sub-distribution fiber optic cable and the at least one second sub-distribution fiber optic cable are arranged in end-to-end relation. The system may also or alternately include a similar lateral sub-distribution system.

In a data-over-cable system, a cable head-end transmits a signal that includes a plurality of analog television signal components an at least one quadrature amplitude modulated (QAM) digital signal component, the signal components being defined by frequency channels. A cable modem has a tunable frequency selection system, operable at a first bandwidth, corresponding to the bandwidth of the frequency channels, and at a second, substantially narrower bandwidth, that provides a filtered signal and a power measurement system that measures the power level of the filtered signal. The frequency selection system scans through the channels, operating at its second bandwidth, and, in each channel, tunes to a first frequency and a second frequency. The power levels of the filtered signals from the first and second frequencies are measured and compared to distinguish the QAM digital signal components from the other signal components.
