摘要: Data units are tunneled through topological restrictions that reside in a path between a first network device and a second network device. For example, a remote network device that resides outside of the domain of a multicast group obtains access to the multicast group by tunneling through the boundary of the domain. A proxy device within the domain functions as a member of the multicast group on behalf of the remote network device. Data units that are transmitted from the remote network device to the proxy device are tunneled to the multicast group via the proxy device. Data units that are transmitted from the multicast group to the proxy device are tunneled to the remote network device via the proxy device.

摘要: A broadcast communication system comprises a transmitting terminal which is effective to transmit broadcast data and a start time of the broadcast data. A first message processing device receives the broadcast data and the start data from the transmitting terminal. The first message processing device transmits the broadcast data based on a schedule and the start time to a second message processing device. The second message processing device receives the broadcast data and the start time from the first message processing device and generates executable broadcast traffic information based on prior traffic information and based on the start time. The second message processing device further selectively conveys the broadcast data to one of a plurality of receiving terminals. The second message processing device further forwards the executable broadcast traffic information to the first message processing device. The first message processing device produces the schedule of the broadcast data based on the executable broadcast traffic information.

摘要: In a network with a sending system networked to at least one receiving system, it is sometimes desirable to transfer relatively short messages between the sending system and one or more receiving systems in a highly reliable yet highly efficient manner. The present invention defines two short message protocols, one of which relies on a statistical model and the other of which uses positive acknowledgement to track receipt of transmitted packets by intended recipient. The statistical reliability mode is based on the observation that for each packet in a message that is transmitted, the probability that at least one packet of the message is received by a given system increases. Thus, in the statistical reliability mode messages are divided into a guaranteed minimum number of packets, with additional packets being added if the message length is insufficient to fill the minimum number of packets. The positive reliability mode of the present invention periodically sets an acknowledgement flag in the packets transmitted for a message. Receiving systems send an acknowledgement in response to receipt of that packet. The sending system tracks receipt of acknowledgements by intended recipient and retransmits any unacknowledged packets so as to positively assure the packets are received. Receiving systems send negative acknowledgements to request retransmission of missing packets. Negative acknowledgement suppression is implemented at both the sender and receiver to prevent a flood of negative acknowledgements from overwhelming the network. Packets are transmitted by the sending system at a transmission rate selected to avoid any adverse impact on the packet loss rate of the network.

摘要: The Protocol Accelerator is a system which significantly reduces the communication latency of complex layered communication protocols. In particular, the protocol accelerator reduces both the message header overhead imposed by layered protocols and the message processing overhead by employing such techniques as classifying, collecting and aligning the headers, using shorter identifiers to represent information in immutable fields of the headers, introducing pre- and post-processing of a message, packet filtering, and packing and unpacking of messages in cases where a backlog of messages has to be processed by the protocol accelerator.

摘要: A solution for matching RADIUS request packets with corresponding RADIUS response packets when the number of simultaneous outstanding requests is greater than 256 involves using a sixteen-octet authenticator field in each packet. For each response packet that arrives, the identifier of the packet is compared in turn with the identifier of each outstanding request packet. If the identifiers match, the authenticators are then compared. If the results of the comparison indicate a match, the packet is accepted and no further processing of the outstanding requests is required. Otherwise, a search of the outstanding request packets is continued. This solution allows for more than 256 simultaneous outstanding RADIUS requests and only encounters a mismatch or ambiguous match with a probability of one in 3.4×1038 packets.

摘要: A head-end in a data-over-cable system transmits a multicast message in a downstream channel to all the cable modems in a particular MAC layer. The message includes an address field that contains an upstream channel multicast MAC address that identifies a particular channel, and is used to send a multicast message for which only cable modems transmitting in the upstream direction in that channel are to respond. When the message is received by the cable modems, the cable modems compare the upstream channel multicast MAC address with addresses stored in a memory. If a match is found, indicating that the cable modem happens to transmit in the upstream direction in the particular channel, it processes the message. If no match is found, the message is discarded. The upstream channel multicast MAC address helps noise avoidance or redundancy problems associated with a particular channel to be quickly remedied, and avoids the head-end from having to send out a large number of unicast messages in order to communicate with all the modems sharing a given upstream channel.

摘要: A novel multi-port network transceiver having an LED interface supporting parallel and serial LED modes. The LED interface has a pair of LED pins for each port. In the parallel LED mode, one pin of this pair represents status of a 10 Mb/s communication, whereas another pin represents status of a 100 Mb/s communication. In the serial LED mode, status information for all ports is transferred using 3 pins supplying a serial data stream, a frame signal and a clock signal. The serial data stream is composed of frames, each of which represents various events for the multiple ports. The frame signal is used to identify the boundary between the frames. The transfer of the serial data stream is synchronous to the clock signal.
