Optimizing a power level for a transmission so that the transmission is receivable at or near a destination, but no farther, is useful for reduced-power transmissions. Taking into account known distance for the transmission as determined by onboard GPS and geographic databases, a power level may be set more precisely. Accounting for atmospheric conditions which may impact transmission as determined by onboard or received measurements of temperature, solar or other conditions may also permit a power level to be set more precisely. An obstruction database may be consulted to determine whether transmissions will degrade due to objects in between the transmitter and receiver, permitting power level, frequency, bandwidth or transmit/receive location to be adjusted accordingly. The techniques may be implemented in any signal transmission scenario including mobile telephones, aircraft, marine or other vehicle radios, mobile devices with Wi-Fi radios for network computing, stationary radios, and other situations requiring communications.

A pen based workslate computer having a detachable, rechargeable stylus is disclosed. The workslate computer includes a housing supporting computer electronics and a stylus charging station defining an opening adapted to receive the detachable stylus. The housing also supports a visible interactive display screen assembly including a sensing assembly. Depending on the position of actuators of the stylus, signal generation circuitry of the stylus generates one of a plurality of signals having different frequencies. The generated signal is received by the sensing assembly and correlated with a position of the stylus with respect to the display screen assembly by the sensing assembly thereby allowing data and/or commands to be input by an operator manipulating a signal generation end of the stylus to "pick" icons or other representations displayed on a LCD screen. When the stylus is inserted in the charging station opening it is held in place by a clamping mechanism and charging circuitry of the charging station recharges a rechargeable power source of the stylus.

Aircraft indicator equipment for enabling pilots to maintain awareness of surrounding mountains, buildings, or other geographical features from which an aircraft must maintain a safe distance is disclosed. When flying an instrument approach to a location of interest (a location of interest including an airport, a runway, a landing zone, etc.), airborne GPS receivers display data regarding a course to an airport which may include an indicator line representative of a course to be flown to the location of interest, a bearing and distance to the location of interest, or a representation of nearby terrain and an alert may be generated should the pilot deviate from the course or fly too near the terrain. Accordingly the disclosure relates to terrain awareness and warning aircraft indicator equipment.

Film type electrodes (15) and (17) extend upwardly along the outside of the dielectric support to terminal grooves (28) on the other end (7). A dielectric coating (29) is applied over the electrodes (15) and (17) to provide electrical isolation from the metal shell (33). A coating (29") may also be applied over the sensors (13) to reduce corrosion and abrasion and to provide electrical insulation.
