Abstract:
The signal received comprises contributions from several channels multiplexed by respective spreading codes. After having estimated response parameters of the channels, soft estimates of the symbols transmitted are calculated. These symbols are then apportioned between a first set of symbols satisfying a confidence criterion applied to the calculated soft estimates and a second set of symbols not satisfying this criterion. A modified signal is determined by subtracting estimated contributions corresponding to the symbols of the first set from the signal received. New soft estimates of the symbols of the second set only are calculated, as a function of the modified signal and of the estimated response parameters, and this may be done with a detection algorithm of more complex nature, in particular a multi-user algorithm, by virtue of the size reduction performed by restricting oneself to the symbols of the second set.

Information relating to a status of a buffer in the mobile station and information relating to a data rate over a reverse wireless links is communicated over the reverse wireless link.
Abstract:
A method and system is provided for compensating polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in an optical communications system includes a controller designed to control a broadband PMD compensator to differentially delay light at each one of a plurality of selected wavelengths. At least one of the selected wavelengths lies between an adjacent pair of channel wavelengths of the optical communications system. A performance parameter value indicative of PMD is measured at each channel wavelength of the optical communications system. An estimated performance parameter value is then calculated at each selected wavelength, and an error function calculated as a function of wavelength based on the estimated performance parameter values. The broadband PMD compensator is then controlled to minimize the value of the error function.
Abstract:
A method and system for reducing non-linear signal degradation effects of WDM optical signals exacerbated by highly correlated bit patterns of optical waveforms in neighboring optical channels. Embodiments include offsetting the transmission times of signals in neighboring channels, and applying different scrambling patterns to the respective data streams prior to transmission on neighboring optical channels.
Abstract:
Optical performance monitoring of a dense wave division multiplex optical communication system is immune to effects of stimulated Raman scattering. Each wavelength is modulated by an orthogonal spreading code dither signal having a predetermined modulation index. At a receiver, a portion of the aggregate optical signal is tapped and passes through a wavelength dependant optical delay filter. For each wavelength, the aggregate signal is multiplied by a synchronized copy of a respective spreading code and an autocorrelator detects the modulation power of the spreading code dither. The system can also be deployed as an optical reflectometer. For each autocorrelator, an aggregate reflected signal is multiplied by a copy of a spreading code having a respective different time delay. The distance to a reflection can be estimated from the time delay that yields the highest autocorrelation value.
Abstract:
Nonlinearity-induced signal distortions are compensated by processing an input communications signal, in the electrical domain prior to Electrical-to-optical conversion and transmission through an optical link of a communications system. According to the invention, a compensation operator is determined that substantially mitigates the nonlinearity-induced signal distortions imparted to an optical signal traversing the communications system. The input communications signal is then input to the compensation operator to generate a predistorted electrical signal. This predistorted electrical signal is then used to modulate an optical source to generate a corresponding predistorted optical signal for transmission through the optical communications system. With this arrangement, arbitrary nonlinearity-induced signal distortions imparted by the optical link can be compensated in such a manner that a comparatively undistorted optical signal is obtained at the receiving end of the optical link.

Abstract:
In a communication network comprising nodes and links between the nodes, a controller node disseminates link state information. A nodal routing table exists at each node comprising routes between pairs of nodes. The nodal routing table is either populated by the given node based on network information received from the controlling node or populated at the controlling node and received by the given node. Each node receives heartbeat signals from its neighbouring nodes. An unexpected delay between heartbeat signals may be perceived as a failure of a link. The perceived failure of that link is reported by the perceiving node to the controlling node. Upon receiving link failure information from a node, the controlling node may determine a subset of nodes in the network influenced by the link failure and indicate the link failure to the determined subset of influenced nodes.
Abstract:
The method seeks a high-performance detection of a signal burst transmitted on the initiative of a sender on a radio channel listened to by a receiver system. The transmitted burst represents a predetermined digital sequence, serving for example to request access to a radio system or to ensure the synchronization of a radio interface. Channel parameters representing a statistical behavior of the radio channel are estimated and a detection magnitude is evaluated on the basis of the estimated channel parameters and of a correlation between a signal received at the receiver system and the predetermined digital sequence. The estimated channel parameters comprise moments of order greater than 2 of the gain on the radio channel.
Abstract:
Frames exchanged between a control unit and a radio terminal via base stations are encapsulated, with timestamping information, in frames over an asynchronous interface between the control unit and each station. The timestamping information accompanying a data frame over the asynchronous interface indicates an instant of transmission of the said frame by each station according to a time counter specific to the radio section of the connection. The information accompanying an acknowledgement frame over the asynchronous interface indicates an instant of reception of the said frame by each station according to the said time counter. The instant of transmission of a data frame is stored. On reception of an acknowledgement frame accompanied by a timestamping information element indicating an instant of reception and indicating the non-reception by the terminal of the said data frame, the reception of the acknowledgement frame is selectively taken into account for the retransmission of the said data frame, on the basis of a comparison between the said instants of reception and transmission.
