The tunable OADM includes a multimode interference region, at least a grating formed on the multimode interference region, and at least two electrodes formed on two sides of the multimode interference region and having carriers induced thereinto, thereby a variation of an optical waveguide in the grating is controlled through controlling the carriers induced into the electrodes so as to further control different propagation of wavelength signals.

Variations in a peak power level of add signals due to transmission trouble are to be reduced with a relatively inexpensive and simple configuration. When an input of optical signals to an optical amplifier unit is cut off by transmission trouble, only amplified spontaneous emission light is supplied from the optical amplifier unit. An output power constant control unit amplifies this amplified spontaneous emission light to a certain level. This amplification level is substantially equal to what it would be if the input optical signals were inputted into the optical amplifier unit. This makes it possible to restrain variations in a ratio of OADM add signals to be added to OADM through signals in an OADM unit in time of transmission trouble.

A grating based demultiplexer module is described. The module includes an integrally formed first section, second section, and third section. The first section includes a diffraction grating formed on the surface of the first section and directs a WDM beam onto the internal surface of the diffraction grating. The third section is positioned to receive angularly separated light from the external surface of the diffraction grating. In some embodiments, the third section can direct individualy beams of the angularly separated light onto the surface of optical detectors. The third section provides structural support and maintains the alignment between the first section and the third section.

A single-sideband dense wavelength division multiplexing optical communication system and method are disclosed that achieve an increased throughput by moving the carrier wavelengths from the center of the corresponding channel band and suppressing one of the sidebands associated with each channel band. Most of the power is placed in the selected sideband and additional bandwidth is available to increase the throughput within the selected sideband. An electrical signal is modulated to provide a passband signal without low frequency components. The disclosed modulation scheme shifts the carrier wavelengths within the wavelength grid to provide additional bandwidth for the selected sideband in each channel band. Generally, the bandwidth (and thus, throughput) that is available to the selected sideband increases by a factor of two.

In a communications network, a method and apparatus for providing QoS parameters based protection against network failure scenarios. The invention selectively allocates network resources for protection of a network communication service based on a QoS parameter requirement for the particular network communication service. An alarm provides notification of a failure scenario disrupting network resources interrupting the network communication service. In response to the alarm notification, the system automatically switches a path of the network communication service to make use of the network resources, which have been pre-allocated for protection of the network communication service.
