Abstract:
A frame-rate converter reduces halo artifacts along edges of moving objects. Halo artifacts occur on interpolated frames where a moving object covers and uncovers pixels along its edges. Motion estimation among three original frames produces hybrid direction motion vectors that are bi-directional for background and objects, but are unidirectional for covered and uncovered regions, since motion vectors with large matching errors are deleted. Covered regions in the interpolated frame are detected as intersecting only a forward but no backward hybrid motion vector. Bi-directional motion estimation from the hybrid motion vectors of two original frames produces refined motion vectors for the interpolated frame. Refined motion vectors in the covered regions are deleted and replaced with hybrid motion vectors from the original frames. Hybrid motion vectors from the original frames are assigned to the critical covered regions rather than using interpolated vectors in the covered regions, reducing halo artifacts.
Abstract:
An electronic device defines a receiving groove for an antenna, a first opening, and a second opening. The first opening and the second opening are at two opposite ends of the receiving groove, and allow an antenna assembly to be extended or retracted in the receiving groove to allow the electronic device to receive different types of wireless signals.
Abstract:
A magnetic recording transducer for use in a data storage device includes a writer pole with a ABS surface, trailing edge bevel and a trailing shield. The effective throat height of the writer main pole is reduced by the use two gap layers between the writer main pole and the trailing shield. A first gap layer is on and in contact with the writer pole trailing surface, and a second gap layer is on a section of the first gap layer on the writer pole trailing edge bevel, from a point removed from the ABS surface and absent from a part on a section of the first gap layer on the writer pole trailing edge bevel nearest the ABS. A method of fabricating the transducer is also provided.

Abstract:
A perpendicular recording head for a hard disk drive. The head includes a non-magnetic backside shield that minimizes or eliminates the flow of backside flux through the head. The head can be fabricated by forming a non-magnetic backside shield layer on a main pole. Portions of the backside shield and main pole can be removed to form a tapered pole portion. A non-magnetic write-gap layer and write shield are then formed onto the backside shield and main pole.
Abstract:
A method for implementing a power saving mode in a hard disk drive. The method includes the steps of flying a head over a data track of a disk that is covered with a lubricant. The speed of the disk is reduced. A voltage is applied to a heating element of the head to move the head closer to the disk. The fly height of the head is then determined. The voltage can be incrementally varied until the head makes contact with the disk. The voltage is terminated and the head is allowed to fly over the data track. The head is also moved to adjacent tracks on either side of the data track. A pressure gradient of the flying head moves the lubricant about the disk to mitigate a modulated wear pattern caused by the reduction in disk speed. The disk speed is then increased in a normal operating mode.

Abstract:
A hard disk drive that includes a disk and a head that is separated from the disk by a flying height. The disk drive also includes a circuit that determines the flying height from an equation that uses a third harmonic of a read signal. The read signal includes a data pattern that is a product of a first data pattern and a second data pattern. The resultant data pattern provides a third harmonic with a relatively high magnitude and improved signal to noise ratio.
