Abstract: Material is fed between a pair of rollers by a pneumatically driven rack rotating a gear, which is connected to one of the rollers through a one direction clutch. When the rack moves downwardly to rotate the roller, a valve is activated just prior to downward movement of the rack stopping to cause a pneumatically powered knife to cut the fed material. Upon completion of cutting of the material, another valve is activated to return the knife to its inactive position and move the rack upwardly to its start position, which is determined by the position of an adjustable stop that limits the upward movement of the rack. This stop determines the amount of downward movement of the rack so as to select the length of the fed strip of material that is cut. In another embodiment, the non-driven roller is moved away from the driven roller when the thickness of the strip of fed material exceeds a predetermined thickness. When the thickness of the strip ceases to exceed the predetermined thickness after having exceeded the predetermined thickness, the non-driven roller is returned toward the rotated roller to cause activation of a valve to stop the downward movement of the rack and activate the knife irrespective of the position of the rack. This results in the thickened portion, which is not usable, being cut as close to the end of the thickened portion as possible so as to reduce material waste.

Abstract: A scratch strain gauge has an annular target guided into its recording position where it cooperates with a scratch element on a scratch arm to indicate strains of opposite senses. The gauge has a guide adjacent one edge of a plate on which rollers are mounted for rotatably mounting the target in cooperation with brushes. The guide cooperates with a groove in the periphery of the target to insure that the groove receives one of the rollers, then the brushes, and finally the other roller as the target is inserted into its recording position. Ears, which are disposed above the rollers and extend outwardly beyond the rollers to overlie portions of the target when the target is in its recording position, aid in insuring that the target is seated on the roller tongues when disposed in its recording position.

Abstract: A thread cutting device for a slide lathe comprising a tool holder support member constructed of a guide member and a slide member reciprocatingly slidable with respect to each other and mounted at a pre-determined oblique angle with respect to the axis of rotation of the lathe spindle whereby the members move in a straight line movement at the oblique angle. SPring biased latch means normally lock the guide and slide members against relative movement when the tool is in a work cutting position. Stop means are connected to the support member to release the latch means to permit the guide and slide members to move relative to each other to cause the cutting tool to move out of engagement with a workpiece and stop continued feed of the tool at a position where the cutting operation is to be terminated.

Abstract: An ultra-sensitive actuator possessing substantial load carrying capacity and positioning range and which is capable of producing motions of 1 micro-inch or less with accuracy, which is thus especially adapted for supplying forces and displacements required to change the figures of mirrors and structural elements of optical equipment, such as, telescopes, including large space telescopes, optical polishing beds, mirrors for positioning devices, mirror deflection devices, mirror aspheric generators and electronic and optional tracking and positioning devices. The actuator includes a housing containing a piezoelectric stack consisting of oppositely oriented piezoelectric crystal discs arranged alternately in series to provide maximum expansion; a normally sealed chamber containing a liquid; a diaphragm dividing a portion of the housing containing the stack from the chamber, and an extensible housing end portion located at the end of the chamber disposed remote from the diaphragm. When a proper voltage is applied to the stack, it is extended to force the diaphragm into the sealed chamber for causing the liquid to exert a driving force against the extensible housing end portion for moving said end portion outwardly of the housing. An expansible bellows defines a part of the chamber and bears against the extensible end portion of the housing and together with the diaphragm amplifies the stack movement. Valves are provided for selectively trapping the displaced liquid for replenishing the liquid and for bleeding the chamber.
