According to the invention, the decentralized data processing unit generates, after the synchronization pulse but before the transmission of a first data packet, an electrical discharge pulse, whereby counteracting an electrical charging of the data processing unit interface by the synchronization pulse.

The invention relates to a method and corresponding devices for transmitting data between a central control device of a passenger protection system in a vehicle and at least one local sensor unit. Said sensor unit comprises a sensor and is operated in a normal operation mode or in a test operation mode. In the normal operation mode, the data transmitted contain sensor measuring data while in the test operation mode, they contain characteristic data. The sensor unit transmits its data packets in both modes of operation after a synchronization pulse that was last detected and adds to the data packets a different characteristic depending on the operation mode by adding at least one data bit so that the data packets of the normal operation mode and of the test operation mode can be uniquely identified using the respective characteristic.

A vehicle occupant restraining system includes a plurality of safety restraint devices and utilizes a main controller and a safing controller to determine whether or not conditions are proper for deploying each safety restraint device. The system discriminates between front, side, rear, and roll-over impact events and determines which safety restraint devices should be deployed in response to an impact event. The system also independently determines whether to activate a fuel cut-off switch in response to an impact event. The main and safing controllers utilize vehicle data from a main center tunnel sensor assembly and various satellite sensors to make deployment decisions. The safing controller is used to independently verify whether or not the safety restraint should be deployed.

A device and method for triggering an occupant protection system when a motor vehicle tilts about a longitudinal axis includes a rate-of-rotation sensor, an inclination sensor, which can be a mechanical inclination switch, and a triggering device. The rate-of-rotation sensor detects a rotation rate about the longitudinal axis and generates an output signal. The inclination sensor detects motor vehicle inclination and generates an output signal. The mechanical inclination switch serves as safing sensor. The triggering device activates an occupant protection system based upon the rotation and the inclination output signals. The occupant protection system triggers only when both the rate-of-rotation sensor indicates a rotary movement greater than or equal to a specific value and the inclination sensor indicates an inclination angle greater than or equal to a given value. The triggering device blocks an activation of the occupant protection system when the inclination signal indicates a tilted position of the vehicle lasting longer than a predetermined time interval even if the rotation signal subsequently indicates a motor vehicle tilting movement about the longitudinal axis.

A device constructed to perform the method does not necessarily require expensive, high-stability acceleration sensors. Sensors of a simple design can be used instead.
