    Abstract: A multicontact electrical connector comprises an insulating housing having a substrate-receiving face. A trough-like opening extends into the face for reception of a substrate. In the housing are spaced-apart terminals having free ends which are proximate to the substrate-receiving face and fixed ends which are proximate to an inner end of the opening. Contact surfaces are on the free ends for contacting spaced-apart terminal pads on the substrate. Contact engagement camming means are provided for flexing the terminals and moving the free ends from the opening allowing the substrate to be placed in the opening under reduced insertion force conditions. As the free ends of the terminals are subsequently moved, the contact surfaces of the free ends will be resiliently biased against the terminal pads. Contact wipe camming means are provided to move the contact surfaces across the terminal pads as normal force occurs permitting a wiping action to take place. A locking means is provided to hold the substrate in place as the wiping action occurs. This assures that the contact surfaces and the terminal pads, where engagement therebetween takes place, are cleaned and a positive electrical connection is effected.

    Abstract: An apparatus is provided to enable a press to automatically apply an electrical connector to a printed circuit board. A locator block is secured to a floating pin holder plate which is mounted to a press ram, the connector is placed in position and partially inserted on the board and the board is secured and accurately disposed below the locator block. The locator block has a recess which surrounds the connector when the locator is lowered by the ram, urges the connector to the vertical and in turn urges the floating plate a slight but important two-dimensional horizontal increment to be precisely positioned and oriented with the connector. When the position of the locator block/floating plate assembly is thus adjusted, the locator block retracts exposing push pins mounted in the floating plate which enter cavities in the connector, engage the terminals therein, and push the terminals fully into plated through-holes of the board. A pre-load block/mounting plate assembly may be placed between the ram and the locator block/floating plate assembly, the pre-load block spaced an incremental distance from the mounting plate held apart by high spring force so that when the connector is fully mounted on the board, the springs compress and the pre-load block does not continue downward during the remainder of the ram's downstroke; and excessive ram force is prevented from being applied to the connector.

    Abstract: A pull to seat electrical connector having a plurality of terminals which are pulled into cavities in an insulative housing through the mating face of the terminal is disclosed. Unterminated wires are first inserted through cavities in the housing and terminals are attached adjacent the housing mating face. When wires are then pulled, the terminals are pulled into the cavities and rotated into alignment with the cavities, so that box-shaped receptacle contact sections are properly oriented. The rear of each cavity conforms generally to the outer contour of the wires, whereas the receptacle enclosing portion of each cavity adjacent the mating face of the connector conforms generally to the receptacle configuration, such as a box-shaped receptacle contact portion. Stop fingers, extending upwardly from the terminal, engage inner shoulders to stop rearward movement of the terminals in the cavities. A retainer cap, formed of a material more flexible than the main housing, is then snapped onto the connector and attached to the mating face to prevent the terminals from being pushed out through the mating face.
