The invention relates to a device for changing the polarization of an incident electromagnetic wave. Existing devices to change the polarization of an incident electromagnetic wave preserve signal decoupling, i.e., the relation between useful polarization and cross-polarization of the incoming signal. Furthermore, known prior art devices are far too big for many applications. The aim of the inventive device is to improve signal decoupling. During transmission of an electromagnetic wave through the transmission polarizer, the cross-coupled fraction of an incoming signal is greatly reflected thus leading to improved decoupling of the transmitted signal. Furthermore, the transmission polarizer can be manufactured in the form of a single planar printed board. The transmission polarizer is particularly useful to change the polarization of an incident electromagnetic wave, i.e. from linear to circular polarization or vice versa, and to rotate the polarization of an incident electromagnetic wave around a fixed angle.

In order to control electromechanically activated charge cycle valves, a circuit is provided in which placement control elements actuate an output stage for the electromechanically activated charge cycle valves and control a gentle placement of the charge cycle valves in a respective end position. For the purpose of communication with the operational control unit of the internal combustion engine, a digital communications computer is provided which provides the placement control element with timing signals. As a result, the placement control elements are freed of communications functions and can be dedicated to performing the placement control in real time.

The oscillator device generates an oscillator signal that is passed on to a transmit/receive device, and the oscillator signal is radiated. The transmit/receive device is set up such that it can receive signals reflected from the object. A phase detection device is coupled at one input to the oscillator device and at a second input to the transmit/receive device. Based on the oscillator signal and the received reflected signals, the phase detection device determines a phase signal. A control and signal-processing device determines, based on the spacings of the sensor modules with respect to one another and the phase signals, a direction of the object with respect to the sensor module.
