In a stencil printing machine, when a printing drum is set at its operating position in the direction of its axis, a drum switch is turned on, and a locking piece is engaged with a groove formed in an engaging rod integral with the printing drum, so that a lock switch is also turned on. In the case where the printing drum pushed into the printing machine is not at the operating position, the drum presence/absence switch is turned on, and the locking piece is not engaged with the groove, so that the lock switch is off. In this case, the locking piece is reciprocated a predetermined distance in both directions. As a result, the locking piece is engaged with the groove of the engaging rod; that is, the printing drum is moved axially to the operating position.

The standard print position mark and the biased print position mark are expressed by different kinds of lines so as to clearly contrast one against the other. In addition, the biased print position indication mark is biased at a greater rate than a ratio of a biasing amount of the printing master from the standard position to the site of the printing master.

The control means may comprise a random access memory to record the data from the stencil length specifying mechanism. The operation amount of the transport means can be related to rotation angle of the printing drum, and operation of the transport means may be terminated by detection of a rotational angle of said printing drum at which said used stencil is completely transported and deposited into said used stencil container can be detected.

In a stencil printer, a printing drum is provided with a clamp plate for clamping an end portion of a stencil master, thereby holding the stencil master on the printing drum. A paper supply mechanism supplies printing sheets to the printing drum in synchronization with rotation of the printing drum. A first motor drives the paper supply mechanism by way of a first transmission mechanism, and a second transmission mechanism is operatively connected to the first transmission mechanism to be driven by the first motor by way of the first transmission mechanism, thereby rotating the printing drum. A phase adjustment mechanism driven by a second motor drives the second transmission mechanism with the first transmission mechanism held stopped, thereby changing the relative phases of rotation of the printing drum and sheet supply operation of the paper supply means. A drum position sensor generates a detecting signal upon detection that the printing drum comes to a reference position. The first motor is driven to rotate the printing drum and is stopped upon generation of the detecting signal. Then the second motor is driven to rotate the printing drum to the reference position.
