Disclosed is a process for preparing an optically active 1-aryl- or 2-aryl-alkylamines of formulas Ia, Ib and Ic with high optical purity and high yield. The process uses an optically active 1- or 2-naphthylglycolic acid of the general formula II as a resolving agent. A catalyst for the bisalkoxycarbonylation of olefins comprising a noble metal compound and a phosphine chalcogenide of the following formula (1): wherein each of R1, R2 and R3 is, independently, an alkyl group or an aryl group each of which may have a substituent, and A is a Group 16 element of the Periodic Table; and R1, R2 or R3 may be combined, directly or through a bridging group, with one another where the groups to be combined may be attached either to an identical phosphorus atom or to different phosphorus atoms. Element A includes oxygen, sulfur and selenium atoms. The noble metal compound includes palladium(II) halides and other palladium compounds. The catalyst may further include a copper(I) halide or other copper compound as a co-catalyst. The use of this catalyst can provide the bisalkoxycarbonylation of olefins with efficiency.

According to this invention, there is provided a playback device including a control unit which causes a rotational speed control unit to control the rotational speed of a drive unit on the basis of a first reference signal such that the rotational speed of the drive unit becomes almost equal to a rotational speed with which second data can be played back from a second recording area, by causing a playback unit to move to a first recording area of a disc-like recording medium and causing a selection unit to select the first reference signal, and then causes the rotational speed control unit to control the rotational speed of the drive unit on the basis of a second reference signal by causing the playback unit to move to the second recording area and causing the selection unit to select the second reference signal.
