Abstract: An optical system includes a lens layer having a first major surface including first and second microlenses and a first light absorbing layer. The light absorbing layer defines first and second through openings with a one-to-one correspondence between the first and second microlenses and respective first and second through openings. Each pair of first microlens and first through opening centered on a first optical axis makes a first angle with a normal to the first light absorbing layer. Each pair of second microlens and second through opening centered on a second optical axis makes a second angle, different than the first angle, with the normal to the first light absorbing layer. A light source emits light incident on the first major surface side. The emitted light includes first and second light beams carrying respective first and second information and propagating substantially parallel to the first and second optical axes, respectively.

Abstract: An optical system for displaying an image to a viewer includes a pixelated display including a plurality of pixels emitting unpolarized image light; a partial reflector having an average optical reflectance of at least 30% in a predetermined wavelength range; a first retarder layer disposed between the pixelated display and the partial reflector; a second retarder layer disposed between the first retarder layer and the partial reflector; and a reflective polarizer disposed between the first and second retarder layers. The reflective polarizer is adapted to increase a brightness of a pixelated image emitted by the pixelated display and displayed to the viewer by recycling at least a portion of unpolarized image light emitted by the pixels; and receive an image ray reflected by the partial reflector and reflect the received image ray toward the viewer.

Abstract: An optical film includes a first optical stack disposed on a visible light absorbing second optical stack. Each of the first and second optical stacks includes a plurality of alternating polymeric first and second layers. The first layers have a higher index of refraction than the second layers at least along an in-plane same first direction. For substantially normally incident light and for at least 80% of wavelengths in a visible wavelength range, the plurality of alternating polymeric first and second layers for at least the first optical stack reflects more than about 60% of the incident light polarized along the first direction and transmits more than about 45% of the incident light polarized along an in-plane orthogonal second direction, and at least the first layers of the second optical stack are more light absorbing for the incident light polarized along the first direction than the second direction.

Abstract: An optical film includes a plurality of polymeric layers shaped along orthogonal first and second directions. A first curve being an intersection of the optical film with a first plane orthogonal to the second direction and to a reference plane has a best-fit first circular arc subtending a first angle at a center of curvature of the first circular arc of greater than 180 degrees where the optical film has a maximum projected area in the reference plane. A second curve being an intersection of the optical film with a second plane orthogonal to the first direction and to the reference plane has a best-fit second circular arc subtending a second angle at a center of curvature of the second circular arc of at least 30 degrees. Reflectance and transmittance of the optical film are described.

Abstract: An optical system includes an optical system axis, a display and at least one lens, the optical system forming a virtual image of an image emitted by the display for viewing by an eye, the eye having an optical eye axis, such that a first retinal image of the virtual image at a first virtual image location and an associated first field angle, the first field angle between about 5 degrees and about 30 degrees, has a first image resolution when the eye axis is substantially coincident with the system axis, and a second image resolution when the eye is rotated so that the eye axis is substantially coincident with a first field axis extending between the eye and the virtual image at the first field angle, wherein the second image resolution is greater than the first image resolution.
