Abstract: A voice-activated encoding method includes determining a voice power parameter based on a frequency domain representation of a voice signal from a voice microphone. The method includes determining an ambient power parameter based on a frequency domain representation of at least one ambient signal from at least one ambient microphone spaced from the voice microphone. The method also includes enabling encoding of an audio signal based on the voice signal in response to comparing the power parameters and a threshold value. A headset including a controller may use the method to determine whether to enable or disable encoding, transmission, or both of an audio signal to another device.

Abstract: A personal protective equipment device is presented. The PPE device includes a microphone configured to capture an ambient sound stream. The PPE device also includes a sound analyzer that receives the ambient sound stream and characterizes a sound fingerprint around the device based on the ambient sound stream. The PPE device also includes a function preset selector that, based on the characterized sound fingerprint, selects a function preset. The PPE device also includes a function preset implementor that implements the function preset in response to an event trigger. Implementing the function preset includes adjusting a functional setting of a device from a first setting to a second setting.

Abstract: A personal protective equipment device is presented that includes a speaker configured to provide a modified sound to a user. The device also includes a microphone configured to capture an ambient sound stream. The device also includes a sound analyzer that receives the ambient sound stream from the microphone and identifies a first sound in the ambient sound. The device also includes a sound processor that applies a model to the first sound, based on the sound identification, to obtain the modified sound, wherein the model changes a characteristic of the identified sound. The modified sound is provided to the speaker. The model comprises an algorithm stored locally in a model database within a memory of the personal protective equipment device.

Abstract: A short-range communication system is presented that includes a system control unit and a personal protective equipment device. The system control unit includes a network creator configured to create a short-range network on a wireless frequency, an interference detector configured to detect a device on an interfering frequency, and a control unit frequency hopper configured to, based on the detected device, scan a frequency range for an open frequency and switch the system control network to the open frequency. The personal protective equipment device includes a network joiner configured to join the short-range network and a device frequency hopper configured to switch the personal protective equipment device to the open frequency.
