The above arrangement is particularly applicable to providing multichannel multipoint distribution services (MMDS) over a radio communications system.

    摘要: Systems and methods for problem signature terminal diagnosis are disclosed. In an example embodiment, measured operational statistics of a satellite terminal of a peer group of satellite terminals are received and converted into normalized operation statistics. Normalized deviations of the operational statistics are determined and compared to the threshold deviations. A diagnosis zone corresponding to a problem signature is determined based on the normalized deviations by determining that coordinates of the normalized deviations are within the diagnosis zone, comparing a ratio based on the normalized deviations to a threshold ratio, or comparing a differential of the normalized deviations to a threshold differential. A satellite terminal is diagnosed with a problem defined by the problem signature based on the determined diagnosis zone.

Terminal statistics are obtained locally at the terminal and stored in an onsite validation tool log. An onsite diagnosis is determined using an onsite validation tool and stored the onsite validation tool log. The initial and onsite diagnoses are compared. In response to a difference between the initial and onsite diagnoses, the remotely and locally obtained terminal statistics are compared. The site diagnostic tool is adjusted based on the initial diagnosis, the onsite diagnosis, and the remote and local terminal statistics.

A peer group of satellite terminals is determined. Terminal profiles with terminal characteristics for the satellite terminals in the peer group are determined. A normalized baseline profile including normalized terminal characteristics for the peer group is determined. Measured operational statistics of the satellite terminals in the peer group are received and converted into normalized operation statistics using the terminal profiles and the normalized baseline profile. Normalized peer group operational statistics including a mean and a standard deviation of normalized operational statistics are determined. A normalized deviation of the normalized operational statistics is determined for each satellite terminal. The normalized deviations for each satellite terminal are compared to a threshold deviation. Satellite terminals are diagnosed as good, degraded, or bad.

    摘要: An approach is provided for managing bandwidth in a data network. Capacity is allocated on a communication channel, which can be utilized for transporting data traffic or support network administrative functions (e.g., ranging), for a terminal to transmit data over the communication channel. In anticipation of the terminal having to transmit additional data, additional capacity is allocated on the communication channel for the terminal prior to receiving a request for bandwidth by the terminal. The anticipatory allocation is determined according to loading of the data network. This approach as particular applicability to shared capacity systems, such as a satellite communication system.
