Abstract: A method includes awaiting for a gateway period, at a lighting system element of a lighting control group, for zero or more gateway messages from a gateway over a wireless communication network; tracking, at the lighting system element, zero or more gateway messages from the gateway that are received; and, in response to the zero or more gateway messages received, requesting designation of a gateway repeater to communicate with the gateway. The method further includes awaiting for a controller period, at the lighting system element, for zero or more controller messages from a local lighting zone controller over the wireless communication network; tracking, at the lighting system element, the zero or more controller messages from the local lighting zone controller that are received; and, in response to the zero or more controller messages, requesting designation of a local lighting zone repeater to communicate with the local lighting zone controller.

Abstract: An example radio frequency (RF) communication system includes a gateway server and a plurality of RF nodes. The plurality of RF nodes includes hub RF nodes and member RF nodes. Member RF nodes include a member RF node memory coupled to a member RF node processor, along with member programming in the member RF node memory, which includes functions. The functions configure the member RF nodes to connect to a nodal wireless network via a respective hub RF node. Hub RF nodes include a hub RF node memory coupled to a hub RF node processor, along with hub programming in the hub RF node memory, which includes functions. The functions configure the hub RF nodes to send to a member RF node via the nodal wireless network, an administrative request message. The functions further configure the hub RF nodes to receive from a member RF node an administrative response message.

Abstract: An example method includes, in response to receiving a gateway heartbeat message from a lighting system non-connected gateway RF node, incrementing a gateway heartbeat counter. In response to receiving a repeater RF node heartbeat message from a network RF node of lighting system non-connected network RF nodes set to a repeater role, incrementing a repeater heartbeat counter. In response to a cycle time exceeding a cycle time timeout, the gateway heartbeat counter not exceeding a gateway heartbeat threshold, and the repeater heartbeat counter exceeding a repeater heartbeat threshold, selecting a selected network RF node of the RF nodes set to the repeater role. Transmitting, via an extended star wireless network, a registration message to the selected network RF node. In response to transmitting the registration message and having a network RF node role state set to an unconnected role, setting the network RF node role state to a connected role.

Abstract: A method includes receiving, via a wireless communication interface of a provisioning device, wireless advertisements from lighting system elements. The method further includes determining, via the provisioning device, signal strengths to the lighting system elements based on the wireless advertisements or reported signal levels between the lighting system elements. The method further includes forming a lighting control group by the following steps. First, iteratively transmitting, via the provisioning device, a flashing command to each lighting system element to cause a light source on a lighting system element to flash in order of the determined signal strengths from highest to lowest. Second, determining whether the lighting system element with the light source flashing is being added to the lighting control group. Third, assigning, via the provisioning device, some or all of the lighting system elements to the lighting control group based on the determination.

Abstract: A method includes tracking one or more echoes of an original message sent from a battery-powered device in a wireless communication network. The battery-powered device includes a lighting control device or a phenomenon sensor. The method further includes adjusting a likelihood of designating a repeater for the battery-powered device based on the battery-powered device receiving an adjustment echo of the one or more echoes or one or more line-powered devices receiving the original message directly from the battery-powered device. The method further includes determining whether or not to designate a repeater for the battery-powered device based on the battery-powered device receiving a determination echo of the one or more echoes of the original message, or the one or more line-powered devices receiving the original message directly from the battery-powered device.

Abstract: A method includes generating, via a lighting system design software on a computing device, a layout to place lighting system elements in a floorplan of a building. The method further includes specifying, via the lighting system design software, a lighting sequence of operation for behaviors of the lighting system elements. The method further includes transmitting the layout and the lighting sequence of operation over a network to a provisioning device or a gateway/edge device. The method further includes programming settings for the lighting system elements based on the lighting sequence of operation. The method can optionally include assigning, via the provisioning device, network addresses to the lighting system elements based on the layout. The step of programming settings for the lighting system elements can further be based on the assigned network addresses.

Abstract: A method includes based on neighbor relationships among radio frequency (RF) nodes of a flooding wireless network, designating some but not all of the RF nodes as repeaters. The designating step selects (RF) nodes as repeaters such that each RF node of the flooding wireless network has at least two neighboring RF nodes designated as repeaters. The method further includes configuring designated RF nodes to act as repeaters to receive and resend network packet transmissions from other RF nodes through the flooding wireless network. The method further includes configuring all RF nodes not designated as repeaters not to resend network packet transmissions from other RF nodes through the flooding wireless network.
