    Abstract: WET PROCESS PHOSPHORIC ACID IS REMOVED FROM AN ACIDIC SLUDGE WHICH SETTLES FROM THE CRUDE ACID AND IS CONCENTRATED TO SUPERPHOSPHORIC ACID. THE SUPERPHOSPHORIC ACID IS THEN MIXED WITH AQUEOUS AMMONIA AT A TEMPERATURE GREATER THAN 70*C. WHEREUPON THE MIXTURE IS THEN HELD AT 45-65*C. UNTIL AT LEAST 5% SOLIDS PRECIPITATE. THE PRECIPITATED SOLIDS ARE NEUTRALIZED TO PH 5-6 WITH THE ACIDIC SLUDGE TO PROVIDE NON-HYGROSCOPIC AMMONIUM PHOSPHATE. THE FILTRATE PROVIDES AN AMMONIUM POLYPHOSPHATE FERTILIZER SOLUTION WHICH DOES NOT PRECIPITATE MAGNESIUM-CONTAINING SOLIDS.
