PHENOL PRODUCED BY DECOMPOSITION OF CUMENE HYDROPEROXIDE IS PURIFIED BY HEATING WITH HYDROBROMIC OR HYDROIODIC ACID, OR THEIR WATER-SOLUBLE SALTS, FOLLOWED BY DISTILLATION. THIS TREATMENT NOT ONLY REDUCES CARBONYLBEARING IMPURITIES, BUT ALSO REDUCES METHYLBENZOFURAN IMPURITIES.
Abstract:
NOVEL 2-ALKYLAMINO-4-AMINO-6-CHLORO-S-TRIAZINE-FORMALDEHYDE ADDUCTS ARE PREPARED BY REACTING A 2-ALKYLAMINO4-AMINO-6-CHLORO-S-TRIAZINE WITH FORMALDEHYDE IN AN INERT ORGANIC SOLVENT USING AN ALKALINE CATALYST. REACTION TEMPERTURES OF 60 TO 80*C. FOR ONE TO THREE HOURS ARE PREFERRED. THE REACTION MIXTURE MAY BE COOLED TO SEPARATE THE PRODUCT; EVAPORATION OF THE SOLVENT AT ADVANCED TEMPERATURES SHOULD BE AVOIDED AS THIS MAY CAUSE FORMATION OF BY-PRODUCTS. THE PRODUCTS ARE HIGHLY SELECTIVE HERBICIDES.

OXYALKYLATED DERIVATIVES OF GLYCOLURIL AND SUBSTITUTED GLYCOLURILS ARE PREPARED BY HYDROXYALKYLATION WITH 1,2EPOXIDES IN THE PRESENCE OF A SUITABLE CATALYST. THE COMPOUNDS ARE USEFUL TO PREPARE POLYESTERS, ALKYD RESINS, AND POLYURETHANES AND AS LUBRICANTS AND SURFACE ACTIVE AGENTS.

1,2-DIAMINOPROPANE CAN BE PREPARED FROM 1,2-METHYLGLYOXIME IN GOOD YIELD BY HYDROGENATION IN THE PRESENCE OF A HYDROGENATION CATALYST IN ANHYDROUS ALCOHOLIC MEDIUM AT LOW TEMPERATURES UNDER STRONGLY BASIC CONDITIONS.
