Abstract: A nuclear reactor includes a reactor core and a pressure vessel surrounding the reactor core. A plurality of tubes pass through the bottom part of the vessel and extend towards the core. These tubes have upper ends forming guide tubes for control rods. The core is formed of a plurality of core units each comprising a fuel assembly and a rod movable in one of the control rod guide tubes. The fuel assemblies are substantially polygonal in cross section and are arranged in a polygonal lattice. Each of the fuel assemblies rests on a separate control rod guide tube. The fuel assemblies are arranged close together with at most only a small gap between them and are laterally supported by the adjacent fuel assemblies and the control rod guide tubes.
