A sealing system to prevent loss of a process fluid from a device having a device opening and a rotating member operable for rotational movement within the device opening. A rotary shaft seal such as a labyrinth seal, seals the rotating member in the device opening to inhibit leakage of process fluid. A chamber is connected to the device to recover leakage of the process fluid that leaks from the rotary shaft seal. A barrier seal is connected to the chamber to inject a barrier fluid under pressure to prevent the escape of process fluid from the chamber. The chamber discharges a mixture of barrier and process fluid to a filter, such as a coalescing filter, to separate the barrier fluid from the process fluid. Barrier fluid vapor and water vapor traps can also be used for purification purposes. The barrier fluid is recovered and recycled back to the barrier seal. The process fluid is returned to the device.

A process fluid recycle system for compressor assemblies to recycle process fluid vapor flowing from one or more compressors to gear case(s) through shaft seal(s). The flowing process fluid is recycled back to the low pressure inlet of the compressor assembly by way of a recycle conduit. Coalescing filters are provided to separate oil mist from the process fluid vapor. Oil vapor and water vapor can also be removed, where necessary, by suitable oil and water vapor traps. During startup and shutdown or other times when low pressure transients occur that could cause a back flow of gear oil from the gear case into the compressor(s) by way of the shaft seal(s), an anti-back flow compressor is operated to ensure that the pressure within the gear case will be less than within the compressor.

This invention comprises an adsorption process for the removal of at least N2O from a feed gas stream that also contains nitrogen and possibly CO2 and water. In the process the feed stream is passed over adsorbents to remove impurities such as CO2 and water, then over an additional adsorbent having a high N2O/N2 separation factor. In a preferred mode the invention is an air prepurification process for the removal of impurities from air prior to cryogenic separation of air. An apparatus for operating the process is also disclosed.

For PSA or TSA prepurifiers, the temperature rise on adsorption is particularly troublesome when the temperature rise reaches the end of the bed at the end of the adsorption step. This results in an increase in the CO2 and N2O concentration at the end of the cycle. Addition of a regenerator in the middle of the adsorption layer will reduce the temperature rise at the end of the bed and thus enhance the performance of the bed.
