Functional devices using charge transfer complexes formed as a layer on a substrate. In one embodiment of the invention, the device comprises a substrate, an electrode layer formed on one side of the substrate, at least one layer of a charge transfer complex capable of undergoing a variation in charge transferability by application of external energy, and another electrode layer formed on the complex layer. The charge transfer complex consists essentially of an electron donor and an electron acceptor, at least one of which is an organic compound having a long-chain alkyl substituent. In another embodiment, a charge transfer complex layer is provided on a substrate as polarized in one direction, in which the charge transfer complex does not necessarily contain such a substituted donor or acceptor compound as in the first embodiment but ordinary charge transfer complexes may be used. A pair of electrodes may be provided to sandwich the complex layer therebetween.

A photosensitive material for electrophotography which comprises an electrically conductive support of a desired shape and an organic photoconductive layer formed on the substrate, is provided. The organic photoconductive layer is formed from a solution of an organic charge-generating compound, an organic charge transfer compound and an organic resin in an organic solvent after low temperature treatment thereof wherein the solution is cooled to a temperature sufficient not to cause the solutes to be precipitated or the solution to be coagulated for a time enough to allow interaction between the compounds and the resin binder and is returned to room temperature. This solution is applied to the support and dried to form a photoconductive layer on the support. The photoconductive layer may be of a single-layer structure or a double-layered structure wherein at least one sub-layer should be formed from a solution subjected to the low temperature treatment. A process for making the photosensitive material is also described.

In an electrochromic display device including a pair of opposed substrates, a display electrode formed on one of the substrates and a counter electrode formed on the other substrate, the response speed and display life of the device are improved by its novel counter electrode structure including a low conductive film arranged to face the display electrode and a high conductive film arranged to uncover, adjoin or cover the former. Alternatively, the low conductive film is embedded in the high conductive film to face the display electrode. Each of the conductive films is essentially made of In.sub.2 O.sub.3, In.sub.2 O.sub.3 --SnO.sub.2 or SnO.sub.2. The high conductive film may be made of Au, Ag or Pt. Where the low conductive film is an insulating film, it is sandwiched by the high conductive films. The insulating film is made of a metal oxide, metal fluoride or metal nitride. The difference in electric resistance between the low and high conductive films is selected 10 times or more. This novel counter electrode structure reduces the leakage current and provides a uniform current density distribution thus ensuring an improved response speed and display life.
