    摘要: Improved communication systems and methods are disclosed. In one embodiment, a downhole communications system comprises a downhole transceiver and a surface transceiver. The surface transceiver receives a discrete multi-tone (DMT) modulated uplink signal from the downhole transceiver, and transmits a downlink signal to the downhole transceiver using a modulation method determined by the transceivers as communications are initiated. The downlink modulation methods supported by the surface transceiver may include DMT modulation and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The modulation mode selection may be based on measured channel characteristics, on proposed data rates, or on other predetermined parameters. The uplink and downlink signals may be communicated over a shared transmission mode on multiconductor cable or wired pipe, and alternatively the uplink and downlink signals may be communicated over separate transmission modes.

    摘要: A downhole telemetry system having discrete multi-tone modulation and dynamic bandwidth allocation is disclosed herein. In one embodiment, the downhole telemetry system comprises a surface transceiver, a cable, and a downhole transceiver coupled to the surface transceiver via the cable. The downhole transceiver communicates to the surface transceiver using discrete multi-tone (DMT) modulation to transmit telemetry information over a set of frequency subchannels allocated for uplink communications. The surface transceiver may likewise communicate to the downhole transceiver using DMT modulation to transmit information over a set of frequency subchannels allocated for downlink communications. The number of uplink and downlink communications subchannels is preferably variable and preferably can be changed depending on the operating mode of the system. This allows additional subchannels to be allocated for downlink communications during programming and configuration of the downhole equipment, and additional subchannels to be allocated for uplink communications during normal logging operations. The set of uplink communications subchannels may be disjoint from the set of downlink communications subchannels, and the sets may be spaced apart in frequency or interleaved in frequency. The cable may be a single conductor or multi-conductor logging cable. In the case of the multi-conductor logging cable, one of several possible orthogonal transmission modes may be used to convey the information signals.

    摘要: An acoustic telemetry system is disclosed that reduces any through-drillstring drilling noise which contaminates a through-drillstring telemetry signal. Normal filtering operations are provided to remove noise outside the frequency band of interest, and reference signal filtering operations are provided to reduce the in-band noise, thereby enhancing the telemetry system's data rate and reliability. In one embodiment, the acoustic telemetry system includes a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter induces an acoustic information signal that propagates along the tubing string. Existing noise in the tubing string contaminates the information signal. The receiver is provided with sensors for measuring the corrupted information signal and a reference signal that is indicative of the noise present in the measured information signal. The receiver uses a filter to convert the reference signal into an estimate of the information signal corruption, and a summing element to subtract the estimate from the reference signal to produce an information signal with reduced corruption. In a preferred embodiment, the information signal is propagated in an axial transmission mode, and the noise in the torsional mode is used as the reference signal for reducing noise the information signal picks up in the axial mode.

    摘要: A reliable, high data rate, downhole acoustic telemetry system is disclosed. In one embodiment, the acoustic telemetry system includes a tubing string with an acoustic transmitter and an acoustic receiver mounted on it. The acoustic transmitter transmits telemetry information by modulating an acoustic carrier frequency that propagates along the walls of the tubing string. The transmitter is preferably mounted at a selected position relative to the end of the tubing string. The selected position is preferably less than &lgr;/4 from the end or approximately n&lgr;/2 from the end, where &lgr; is the wavelength of the carrier frequency in the tubing string, and n is a positive integer. In a more preferred embodiment, n may be the lesser of 4 times the number of cycles in the modulating toneburst and 40. The receiver is preferably mounted at approximately (2n−1)&lgr;/4 relative to the end of the tubing string, where n is a positive integer. Such positioning prevents reflections of the acoustic signal from significantly degrading the received signal. The acoustic signaling advantageously employs pulse shaping to further improve system performance. To enhance data transmission rates, the acoustic receiver advantageously includes an equalizer that compensates for signal dispersion and intersymbol interference while simultaneously minimizing other forms of signal corruption such as additive noise and channel nonlinearities. The equalizer is preferably an adaptive, nonlinear equalizer that may also be fractionally spaced. Such equalizers eliminate any requirements for spacing intervals which allow signal reflections to die out. The resulting system is capable of higher data rates. When error correction codes are employed, no reliability losses are incurred.

    摘要: An acoustic attenuator includes a housing having an inner side surface which defines an interior chamber and at least one dampening member both physically and acoustically coupled to the housing and projecting into the interior chamber. Acoustic energy propagating within the housing is deflected into the dampening members for acoustically dispersal within the interior chamber. In various aspects thereof, the dampening members may include one or a group of two or more generally cylindrical sleeves having one end both physically and acoustically coupled to the housing and a second end projecting into the interior chamber. Preferably, when a group of two or more cylindrical sleeves are employed, the sleeves are nested within one another. The dampening members may further include a second, oppositely disposed, group of two or more acoustic attenuators nested within one another and interdigitated with the first group of cylindrical sleeves.
