    Abstract: Described herein are apparatuses and methods for confocal 3D scanning. The apparatus can comprise a spatial pattern disposed on a transparent base and a light source configured to provide illumination to the spatial pattern and an optical system comprising projection/imaging optics having one or more lenses and an optical axis. The projecting/imaging optics may be scanned to provide depth scanning by moving along the optical axis.

    Abstract: An intraoral scanner comprises a light source, a moveable opto-mechanical module, an axial actuator, and an image sensor. The light source is configured to generate light that is to be output onto an object external to the intraoral scanner. The moveable opto-mechanical module comprises integrated projection/imaging optics and an exit pupil, the projection/imaging optics having an optical axis, wherein the projection/imaging optics are entirely integrated into the moveable opto-mechanical module. The axial actuator is coupled to the projection/imaging optics and configured to move the moveable opto-mechanical module comprising an entirety of the projection/imaging optics in the optical axis to achieve a plurality of focus settings. The image sensor is configured to receive reflected light that has been reflected off of the object external to the intraoral scanner for the plurality of focus settings.

    Abstract: Described herein are apparatuses for dental scanning and components of apparatuses for dental scanning. A component of a dental scanning apparatus may include a beam splitter, a transparency and an image sensor. The component may have a first surface and a second surface. The transparency may be affixed to the first surface of the beam splitter, and may comprise a spatial pattern disposed thereon and be configured to be illuminated by a light source of the dental scanning apparatus. The image sensor may be affixed to the second surface of the beam splitter, wherein as a result of the transparency being affixed to the first surface of the beam splitter and the image sensor being affixed to the second surface of the beam splitter, the image sensor maintains a stable relative position to the spatial pattern of the transparency.

    Abstract: Removable barrier devices (e.g., sleeves) for covering medical scanning devices to reduce the chance of cross-contamination between patients and/or to protect the scanning devices from physical damage. The barrier device can include a cover that has an integrated window for passing optical signals between the scanning device and an external environment. The cover can include a sleeve that covers a handle portion of the scanning device to prevent contamination of the handle from a user's hand or glove. The cover and sleeve may both be formed of the same flexible material, or the cover may be rigid to maintain the window in a fixed position and the sleeve may be flexible to allow a user to activate a button or touchpad on the handle. An interface region between the cover and sleeve may provide a hermetic seal. The window may include a nanostructured antireflective material to limit internal reflections.

    Abstract: A dental scanning system may include an intraoral scanner and an extraoral imaging device including a color imaging camera couplable in electronic communication with the intraoral scanner. The system may include non-transitory computer readable medium with instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the system to carry out a method.     Abstract: An intraoral scanner comprises a light source to emit light, a spatial pattern to output patterned light, a beam splitter, an optical system to focus the patterned light, and a hollow front tip comprising a mirror to redirect the patterned light out of a side exit of the intraoral scanner. The intraoral scanner further comprises an image sensor to receive returning patterned light that has reflected off of the teeth and been redirected to the image sensor by the beam splitter. The intraoral scanner further comprises a depth scanning module to axially translate one or more lenses of the optics system in an optical axis to change a focus setting of the optics system. The depth scanning module is configured to axially translate the one or more lenses by 0.1-5 mm to achieve a depth scanning range of 5-40 mm at a scan speed of about 5-50 scans per second.
