    Abstract: Systems and methods to reduce aerodynamic drag and/or affect flight characteristics of an aerial vehicle may include adjustable fairings associated with one or more components of the aerial vehicle. The adjustable fairings may be coupled to and at least partially surround a motor, propulsion mechanism, motor arm, strut, or other component of an aerial vehicle. In addition, the adjustable fairings may be passively movable between two or more positions responsive to airflow around the fairings, and/or the adjustable fairings may be actively moved between two more positions to affect flight characteristics. Further, the adjustable fairings may include actuatable elements to alter a portion of an outer surface of the fairings to thereby affect flight characteristics. In this manner, adjustable fairings associated with various components of an aerial vehicle may reduce aerodynamic drag and/or may improve control and safety of an aerial vehicle.

    Abstract: Devices or systems such as aerial vehicles may determine that they are located within a common locality based on data captured during an event, such as the emission of light, sound or other matter or energy. Where sensors associated with such devices or systems are each determined to have captured data associated with the event, the devices or systems may be determined to have been located within a common locality during the event. The locality may be defined with respect to the data or the devices or systems, e.g., a range associated with the data or the event, on any basis. A relative distance between the devices or systems may be determined based on the data captured during the event. Additionally, where two or more devices or systems are determined to have been located within a common locality, data exchanged therebetween may be trusted by each of such devices or systems.

    Abstract: Disclosed are systems and methods to detect objects within an environment by an aerial vehicle. An aerial vehicle may detect objects within an environment based on propeller noises emitted by the aerial vehicle that are reflected back to the aerial vehicle by objects in the environment. The propeller noise may be noise that is generated during normal operation of one or more propellers. The propeller noise emitted by the propellers of the aerial vehicle propagates into the environment around the aerial vehicle and reflects off any objects within the environment. Because the noise generated by each propeller is distinguishable, sets of solutions (distance and all directions) may be computed for each propeller. The intersections of those sets of solutions is representative of the actual distance and direction of the object with respect to the aerial vehicle.
